Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention, May 6-8, 2022, Lombard, IL
Pulpvault replied to Pulpvault's topic in Comic Events
In addition to material from the estates of Bob Weinberg and Glenn Lord that will be in the Friday night (May 6) and Saturday night (May 7) auctions at this year's Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention (May 6-8, 2022 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Lombard, IL), we'll have some rare items from other consignors. Here's one of those, the Holy Grail of Robert E. Howard collecting, the 1937 Herbert Jenkins edition of "A Gent from Bear Creek." Per The World of Robert E. Howard website, only 18 copies are know to exist. This copy comes from the estate of Alistair Durie, who bought it at a London bookshop. The dustjacket (which I'll show in the comments) is not original, but a color copy that Alistair got from Glenn Lord. This book will be in our Friday night (May 6) auction. -

Pulp Marketing - How Pulps Advertised Themselves

And here's another featuring a pulp character that made it big in comics as well. This time it's for Tarzan, from the March 1940 issue of The American News Trade Journal. -

Inspired by detective35's post above, I'm going to cheat a little on this one, as it's not for a pulp but for a comic. However, given The Shadow's pulp career, it certainly fits. From American News Trade Journal, January 1940. -
Paintings and Line Work- Show Off Your Original Pulp Art
Pulpvault replied to Ricksneatstuff's topic in Pulp Magazines
Here's a drawing by Virgil Finlay from 1935; I believe this was one of the five samples he sent in to Weird Tales to try to convince editor Farnsworth Wright to use him as an illustrator. It worked and the rest is history. -

Agreed! -
Horror in the Twentieth Century by Robert Weinberg covers pulps, but also other stuff. But it's a great book. Stephen Jones' book, The Art of Horror, also has some great pulp covers but also covers non-pulp stuff.
-
I'm glad you also like "The Art of the Pulps." That was a fun one to do.

The American News Trade Journal also often promoted pulps on their covers, as in this one from the June 1928 issue. -

And pulp publishers not only bought ads in magazines, but in other media as well. Here's an ad for Fiction House's Soldier Stories that appeared on delivery trucks for The American News Company, from the May 1929 issue of The American News Trade Journal. -

Pulps ran ads in trade journals, writer's magazines and other pulps. Some reproduced covers of various issues, but some used new art. If you stumble across any that look interesting, post 'em here! To start with, here's one from The American News Trade Journal (an industry publication for newsstands) for Fiction House from August 1928, which shows the editors of their various pulps.

The strongest early competitor to Weird Tales was the pulp, Strange Tales, which ran for seven issues between September 1931 and January 1933. A complete set of Strange Tales will be in the Friday night (May 6) auction at this year's Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention (May 6-8, 2022 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Lombard, IL) from the estate of Bob Weinberg. Here's the copy of the first issue which will be in the auction, with a classic cover by Hans Wesso and stories by authors such as Clark Ashton Smith and Ray Cummings. Smith's story in the issue, "The Return of the Sorcerer," would be reprinted in 1942 in the CAS Arkham House collection, "Out of Space and Time." -
