  4. I was scanning a few Lariat Story Magazine covers this morning for a friend. Thought I'd post this one, since it's so nice (and we own the painting). December 1926, cover by George H. Wert.
  5. Our interesting find at the flea market today was eight issues of three different Canadian pulp titles, written in French, published in Montreal. There were four issues of "Les exploits fantastiques de Monsieur Mystère l'incroyable gigolo", and two issues each of "Les Exploits Policiers du Domino Noir" and "Les Aventures Etranges de L'Agent IXE-13, L'As des Espions Canadiens". The issues I picked up date from the mid-1960's, but each of these titles had long runs -- over 15 years and 318 issues for the first title and over 20 years and over 950 issues for each of the other two. Jess Nevins "Encyclopedia of Pulp Heroes" has info on each of these titles, which I drew upon for the following descriptions of each title. Monsieur Mystere is a Canadian scientist, inventor and adventurer, and many of his tales are SF, as demonstrated by these couple of covers. "Les Exploits Policiers du Domino Noir" features the exploits of the pulp hero Black Mask (in real life Alain de Guise of Quebec), who dons a black domino mask as he fights crime. And "Les Aventures Etranges de L'Agent IXE-13, L'As des Espions Canadiens" features an agent in the Canadian Secret Service, code named IXE-13. Perhaps not surprisingly, apparently in the 1960's he becomes more like James Bond (though since his adventures began in 1940, he predates Bond by quite a bit). I'll show four of 'em here.
  6. Our friendly neighborhood UPS man delivered this pulp painting earlier today. By artist Jerome Rozen, it's the cover to Complete Stories, April 1927, for "Nemesis of the Range" by Hal Dunning.
  7. Back in July 2019, I was lucky enough to buy the Hubert Rogers cover art for Astounding, May 1940 at an estate sale in Salt Lake City, Utah. It illustrates "Space Guards" by Buck Rogers author Phil Nowlan. It needed some restoration, which has finally been completed. I picked it up from The Conservation Center earlier today; here's a quick shot of it.
  8. For fans of the great Virgil Finlay, my latest art sale catalog is now available. This one is devoted entirely to the art of Finlay, with over 50 originals. Note that none of these are published pieces, but instead are personal pieces (including abstracts) and a few prelims. None of this material has been at any convention, nor has it been in any prior catalog. This material all comes from Finlay's estate, and I'm selling it on behalf of his granddaughter. And if you like Finlay art, I'll have a few hundred other, similar pieces for sale at this year's Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention (May 6-8, 2022 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown center) that has not been shown in any catalog either. You can download the catalog (about 30 MB) through wetransfer at the link below for the next 7 days: https://we.tl/t-2vEa51fsTz
  9. Our friendly neighborhood postman delivered this today. By the great Kelly Freas, it's from the Spring 1953 issue of the pulp, Tops in Science Fiction. It illustrates "Citadel of Lost Ships" by another great, Leigh Brackett.
  10. With the 2022 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention rapidly approaching (May 6-8, 2022 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Lombard, IL), I thought I'd post this piece by the great Frank Kelly Freas, which was sold at our 2005 show. The Saturday of that show, a guy walked in with a portfolio of SF art that he'd collected but now wanted to sell, all from Planet Stories. The good news was that he stopped at my table first. The bad news was that I wasn't at my table. So he went to the next table, where my friend Bob Weinberg was smart enough to be sitting, waiting for just such an opportunity. Bob quickly bought all of the art, which he was happy to show me when I returned to my table. However, taking pity on me, Bob did sell me a few of the pieces that he'd just picked up, including this Freas, which ran in the March 1954 issue of Planet Stories for "Grandma Perkins and the Space Pirates" by James McConnell.

  20. If you're looking for rare or signed Clark Ashton Smith items, there will be several in the Glenn Lord Estate Auction being held Saturday night, May 7, 2022, at this year's Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention (May 6-8, 2022 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Lombard, Illinois). Here's one of 'em - Smith's "The Black Book". This is Smith’s notebook from 1930-1961. It was transcribed and edited in 1961 by Donald Sidney-Fryer with R.A. Hoffman (editor of “The Acolyte”). Although it was later printed by Arkham House in 1979, this is a copy made from the original transcription between October 14 and November 14, 1961, which Lord had professionally bound in black boards. Annotated and with notes on the text by Fryer. A unique CAS item. We'll be posting photos of the auction material on our website (www.windycitypulpandpaper.com) sometime in April.
  21. I recently acquired 15 rejection slips from pulp publishers, which were collected by author O. Dennis in the late 1930's and early 1940's. He managed to get rejected by most of the pulp chains of the time - Street & Smith, Fiction House, Munsey, Popular Publications, the Red Circle group, Standard Magazines, Ziff-Davis, Columbia Publications and Ace Magazines. But his submittal of manuscripts was not entirely in vain. The Fictionmags Index shows that he had seven stories published in the pulps between July 1942 and Spring 1945. Four appeared in Ten Detective Aces, while he had one each in The Phantom Detective, Thrilling Detective and Detective Book Magazine. Here's four of the rejection slips.

In addition to rare books -- many signed by CAS -- and correspondence from him, is this piece of original art. We'll be posting photos of the auction material sometime in April.
