The Jumbo 31 coverless copy was the first GA book I ever bought. It's a Gerber 9 so I thought it was cool just to have a copy. Over the last 5 years I've managed to find three more copies. I really think a rating of "9" is appropriate because they never come around and I've had to pay through the nose for the last 2 copies I found. We all have collecting quirks, mine is to find an issue with only a few copies remaining and get them all!
I recently got the Camera Comics (all from one seller) and haven't sat down to read through the unslabbed copies. I did see that the middle section shows actual photos (WWII, etc.) and the rest is a couple stories about photographers who go around and stumble into adventures/crimes. Kinda like Peter Parker without the cool Spider-man factor.

I'm almost embarrased to post here with all the great collections that have been posted, but what I have is what I have.
I've only been focused on Golden Age books for a couple years and don't have unlimited funds, so this constitutes my entire GA collection:
I'm looking forward to making this group grow!

"What's Van Johnson got that I haven't got?" Buddy, you're about to find out.
-
Congrats on your run! What a great cover on #60, I don't think I've ever seen that one before.
-
Congrats! If my wallet was a little bigger, I'd have snagged that one too. Seeing how most collectors will never have a chance to own an ashcan, I'm happy to have mine. Enjoy!
-
Gary, do you have any idea what ever happened to Browne?
BTW, I just picked up the Slam Bang ashcan!
AH HAH!!! You're the one who snagged that from Metro. I noticed that soon after I got mine, the Slam-Bang copy disappeared. At least I know it's got a good home.
It was on hold for me. You're lucky Stephen didn't mention yours as well as I would have snagged both!
Let's not be greedy, you need to throw us "little people" a bone now and then.

Another great classic Sandman cover!
-
True, that's why I wrote him.
-
I've heard people on here say that they had written and even called him. I always wondered why no one simply asked. Along with alerting comics.org, CGC should change the cover credits on the label for that book (and maybe others???). Does this mean they'll re-do my label? Kidding - I like it how it is.

He's 94 this year! He still has a good sense of humor and he still lays down some mean artwork! Go Creig!!!
-
You get a gold star for your excellent post! Thanks for the new info.

That's the first thing I thought. It's funny how he says he's never seen it before, then he states who drew it. I assume he knew who drew it by seeing the artwork. I'm sure he's still got a sharp "artist's eye".
-
So, has anyone heard of Flanigan? I must admit that I'm not too familiar with a lot of Golden Age artists beyond the ones that everyone knows of, so it's no surprise that I've never heard his name. Does anyone know of any other works that he's done?

Speaking of Adventure #37......
There was some discussion, earlier in this thread I believe, about who the cover artist for this issue was (this cover was also used on Double Action Comics #2). A lot of people attribute it to Creig Flessel. I also thought he drew it. In fact, CGC gives him the credit for it on their grading label (see below).
This has always been one of my favorite golden Age covers, so I wrote to Mr. Flessel asking him to do a cover recreation of this issue. I received a letter back from him today which says: "....However, the cover you are asking me to recreate was not done by Creig Flessel, I have never seen it before. It was done by another (deceased) artist, John Richard Flanigan, who did illustrations for Blue Book and the Pulps." Mystery solved!
I thought some of you would be interested to finally be able to put this to bed. I haven't heard of Flanigan and don't know what other comic work he did. If someone's feeling ambitious, maybe you can research this.

It's official, my estimated final price for the Adventure #37 on Ebay has been blown out of the water! Currently over $660. Now I really feel good about what I paid!
Get your bid in there sacentaur!!!

Nice research FFB. I looked my book up, but got no results.
-
If it does exist, take a pic so we can finally put this to bed
-
Interesting..but a #1 aschan copy does exist....and a #2 aswell
Where is the #1?
-
Oh man, you're taking us back to square one!!!
Basically, a lot of people (myself included) don't think so because no one has ever been able to physically produce the book. Although there's reasons for thinking that it may (or may have) existed also.
-
That's the answer I was looking for!
That's why ashcans have the correct logo that would later be used on the production run, but the cover art and inside material was recycled & didn't matter.
-
Don't let Moondog hear you say that!
Ashcans were used to secure Trademarks, not Copyrights. I'm not an expert, so I don't know the difference, but they are not the same thing.
-
I thought I overpaid for my graded copy, but seeing how this one's a full 1.0 lower than mine and it's getting up there in price, I may not have.
I'm guessing $500 for the final price

Want to sell it?
Golden Age group shot
in Golden Age Comic Books
Posted
Hey it was sitting on Comiclink for a year. I've always loved that cover and since I don't see myself buying a Double Action #2 anytime soon, I broke down and bought it! BTW - I did not get a deal on it, but when you've got to have a certain book.....
