  1. Thanx Buffyfan.

Now, common knowledge tells us that vintage JLAs in 9.0 go for the 9.2 price.

And true 9.2s go for 50-100% more.

Plus, the guide is "supposedly" pricing according to last year before the buzz started.

    Sooo...9.2= $450-600 ??

Yep, that's at least 20% more than what I paid. (thumbs u

    Rick

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

Arex, there are only 2 CGC 9.4's on the census---the last 9.2 sold in June 2006 for $489----Tim is right that the big movement in JLA prices have been in the CGC 9.4 and up (especially 9.6 and up). I would agree with Rick, that it would fetch about $450-600 if it is well-centered with at least off-white pages.

  2. spook,

Did you notice the #45 9.6 for $262 (mine) from last Nov? Not trying to rub salt in the wound, just showing off a lil. Still can't believe I got it so cheap! Guess I should be happy most collectors limit themselves to 1-30. Wonder how long that'll last...

    Rick

I should have started collecting high-grade JLA back in early 2006 when I came back into collecting----at those prices I could have made a big dent into finishing

    my collection.

  3. Nice pick up, John! That is an issue from the 40s that you almost never see!

    Nice copy John (thumbs u

Tim, there was a CGC 9.4 on e-bay about a couple months ago----I got outbid

    at the last second :frustrated:

There was? I wonder how I missed seeing it? Anyways, it's still one of those issues in the 40s that rarely seems to come up for sale.

    Tim,

I looked it up on gpa. JLA #45 CGC 9.4 sold in September 2007 for $358.

I'll be kicking myself until another one comes up for sale

  4. What is going on with CGC 9.6 JLA's??

I didn't think I would ever sell any of mine, but.....

Guess the trickle-down theory is in full force with JLA.

Just did a cursory check of other 9.6s on GPA, and recent sales show significant movement. 'Course, it doesn't differentiate between page PQ (W <<>> CR).

I went 1 for 6. Picked up the JLA #38 in CGC 9.4

Paid a little more than I wanted too,

You only paid roughly 22% more over 30 mos from the last sale (mine)

    vs

My appx 37% increase over 15 mos for my book that's only 6 issue earlier (9 mos).

Then again, they both have 10 copies in 9.4 out of... 56 for mine<>42 for yours.

So I think you did just fine (you're lucky I already have one)

the #25 for me. actually a bit surprised i won that book. 9.2's get no love.

I think 9.2s are a good buy right now. Stopped my bidding at just under $300 since I have an appealing 9.0 for less than half that. Still not a bad price for your Top 25 issue.

Something tells me I'm going to have a really hard time completing my early JLA run.

All of mine with the exception of the #1 are F/VF or better

If you're looking for 9.0 ^, then yes.

If you can wait out the hype-period, you'll be better off.

7.0-8.0---you shouldn't have too much trouble in this range. 'Specially post-69 (year AND issue)

Guess I should splurg for the Brave and Bold 28 while I can too... at least in a low grade? What do you guys think?

I think you should get one as fast as you can; that book ain't going down any time soon. And congrats on your #1; you're one up on me (you basturt)!

    Rick

    My take on the JLA's---

9.8's----can't wait to see what these go for----Tim's sitting in a very favorable position

9.6's----they are exploding! Some are going for well over 2x what they would have gone for only 3 months ago.

    9.4's----climbing steadily

    9.2's----bargain prices for now

  5. Wow, we both had the same max for this book ($750).

And yep, you got your #20 at the right time.

I snagged the 9.4 #32, but fell short of the others. Should I feel fortunate that I didn't get caught up in the rush (like it seems some others did); or do I need to start digging deeper?

Or should I just sell now? hm(shrug)

    Rick

Good pick up Rick, I was eyeing that one too.

I went 1 for 6. Picked up the JLA #38 in CGC 9.4

Paid a little more than I wanted too, but with these recent JLA prices---

I am very happy with the purchase

  6. Uh, I know it's top census & everything...with Penguin's 3rd Silver Age app...but, uh,

$1,434.00???????? (+ s/h...actually at that price, they should throw that in)

Tim, are you crazy, boy? :o

Heritage is loving you right about now, man!

    Rick

    :o

OMG!!! What is going on with CGC 9.6 JLA's??

I didn't think I would ever sell any of mine, but..... hm

  7. I had a few reasons Spookley. In no particular order I'd list a few of them as the following:

    1. My goal was a 9.4 run or better for the first 50. I realized that even if I could find all of the remaining books I needed to complete the run it was doubtful I'd be able to afford a copy of #1 in that grade. Barring some financial windfall coming my way that I didn't see happening. So what would be the point of getting so close to a goal when there was a very real chance I'd come up short in the end.

    2. While I certainly enjoyed the hunt for new additions to fill the run. And I was pleased to put together the books I did. At the end of the day my collection was still a group of books that essentially just sat in a box. It wasn't like I was going to crack the books out of their slabs to touch or read them. Obviously for fear of doing anything to lower their grade. So I got to the point that I couldn't see a lot of sense in continuing to invest the $$$$ collecting. Nor did it make sense to me to just sit on the books I owned waiting to see what they may be worth in the future. So I put my collection up for sale and sold most of them off.

You can see from my registry what I have left. (It's kind of funny to me that my "set" is still top 5 with just 3 books left).

    3. Concerns about the pressing of books and some of the other problems that have cropped up involving HG stuff (take Jason Ewert as an example) that made me question how legit future purchases might be.

There were probably a few others but this probably gives you a good idea of why I'm not in the game any more.

I agree with everything you stated.

    1. I spent about a year trying to figure out what and how to collect. For example, collect some of my favorite titles---(ASM, FF, Avengers, X-men, Justice League) in VF or better (raw). Or collect low to mid-grade GA titles (ie: More Fun with Spectre/Dr. Fate, Detective, Action, All-star). Or Collect 1 title in high grade

    2. I eventually decided to collect only HG JLA #1-100. I would have liked to collect issues in CGC 9.4 or better, but that was not financially feasible, so I decided on CGC 9.0 or better on most of the expensive issues and CGC 9.4 or better on #50-100.

    3. My slabs do just sit in a box, but right now the excitement is in the hunt for more slabs to add to the collection and moving up in the registry. I am right behind you at #6 on the registry---I think you need to sell some of those books :baiting:

    4. The manipulation of comic books is a big concern. I don't find anything wrong with restoration, pressing, etc... (however not trimming (tsk) ---as long as it is fully disclosed, so that I can make up my own mind.

Simple solution to your #3. Buy my copy of #2. You'll pass me then. (thumbs u

lol I wish I could. I'm looking for #2 in CGC 9.0 (your 9.4 would be too expensive for me).

  9. I see that the CGC Book of the day is a JLA #20 in 9.4. If I was still in the hunt I'd have wanted that one. It was one of the few I never could find in 9.4 within the first 20-30 that I needed for my run.

Yeah, good thing you were out of the market by the time one came up on eBay, so I was able to pick it up for some ridiculous price like 2X Guide without you driving me up.

There's another copy on Heritage right now to tempt you. Prices are on the move in HG JLA-land, though, so I'm guessing this copy will go for more than the last.

Would love to have that JLA #20 in 9.4, but it's already bid up to $1000 for the

    next bid :frustrated:

    Acesilver,

How come you stopped collecting HG JLA? (shrug)

  10. What are your minimum grade requirements for your JLA collection?

For me, #1-50 in at least CGC 9.0 or better

#51-100 in at least CGC 9.4 or better

#101-200 (if I decide to collect them) in at least CGC 9.6 or better

    1-29 9.2 or better

    30-99 9.4 or better

I started at VF or better. Then got tired of paying to upgrade. So I finally settled on 9.4 or better for 1-50. And stopped collecting books outside of those. Even though I had 9.4 and 9.6 books scattered up through 120 or so.

:o Welcome back to the boards, Scott!

    Acesilver,

Good to have you on the boards. (thumbs u

I saw on your registry that you stopped collecting HG JLA. Are you actively collecting something else now?
