  1. GPA is reporting a $3000 sale of a Thor 260 35 cent price variant in May. Thor 260 record price Does anyone have any information on where this sales took place?
  2. Wow. What an amazing bargain. Is Weird Wonder Tales #15 still considered one of the rarest 30 centers? This copy and the consignment 1.5 from MCS both sold in February, but there are thought to be less than 20 copies remaining, right? I absolutely love your blog, by the way. Thank you very much for it's existence. Weird Wonder Tales #15 is definitely one of the rarest 30 centers. I put it and Kid Colt 208 as the two toughest.
  3. Outstanding - still looking for that one and the Sgt. Rock.
  4. This is a good example of when Overstreet is not your friend if you are a seller... Someone got a really really really good buy on this one - and a volume discount with the other two Weird Wonder Tales Variants to go with it.
  5. If I remember correctly, back in the day (1999-2001) before it got too zany, a CGC 9.4 copy sold for $150-$200. A great deal, and this is might be the same copy (looks similar to the scan) with a quick press job. You are correct. A 9.4 copy was graded back in July 2001, one of the first books CGC graded. I don't know if the book was pressed or a straight resubmit, but the 9.4 disappeared from the census and the 9.6 appeared in the census in December of 2004. The book was listed on ComicLink for a long time at what was then a very high price - like $3000. What was a high price then would be a bargain today. That book was and remains the single highest graded for more than ten years. The 9.4 is also the only one in that grade and was graded this past June and is not a resubmit.
  6. I think the strong reaction is probably due JDOGs use of the term "shillers". Who knows if the market for these books is going to be up or down? I don't. As another poster mentioned, there are many factors that come determine market prices and trends. I do think that interest has been rekindled with the movie announcements. JDOG points out that two bidders bid on the recent ebay auctions. Interesting research, but he runs off the rail when he says "without any bids from regular bidders" Can you be MORE regular than when you bid on every auction. "this guy and his friend" There is no indication that the two bidders are friends. As a matter of fact, guys who always outbid me weren't on my good friend list. "phony "buyers"" A buyer that bids on a book and pays for it isn't phony. "sketchy ebay sales" The sales look legit to me, validated by Gregreece's sales. "obviously conspiring with each other" Again, no evidence "SHILLING!!" This is not a word to throw around for a legit auction or sale. In most cases shilling is illegal and implies a conspiracy between a seller and a bidder to drive up the price. Since this isn't what is happening here, the term shouldn't be used. Collector, Speculator, Investor, Hoarder, Genius, insufficiently_thoughtful_person, Fanboy are all terms that could be used for the Buyer, but Shiller is not one that should be used. JDOG may not like the fact that book has recently risen in value. I wish I had loaded up a couple of years ago. He may be right that the price may drop. He may also be wrong. Apart from the movie hype, he might consider a couple of additional reasons why JDOG may be wrong about the long-term outlook for this book. There are around 300 9.8 certified copies by CGC. There are almost that many competitive registry sets. Collectors that register their books in the registry are a very small subset of collectors. Demand for this book? Of course. Each transaction requires a buyer and a seller. High prices will normally chase out more books, if they are available. But currently, if we generously say the market is $2000 per certified 9.8 book, and there are 300 of them, the total market value of the book is $600,000. Like most markets, most of the books are not currently for sale, so the market price per book is set by the prices agreed upon by the current buyers and sellers. You have some extra cash, maybe you want to build a position in Star Wars 1s. You wouldn't have to be Warren Buffett to do it, and there have certainly been worse investment ideas. There is currently a Signature Series book with a $3500 bid on it. If I think I can buy nice 9.8 copies, get them signed and sell them for more, I might take the chance.
  7. Holy krap, really??? My bad, I thought someone was fishing for a sucker with that price... -slym There's a 9.4 35c variant in the latest Heritage Auction, so it will be interesting to see where that lands. Currently at $9,000 ($10,755 with BP) with a couple of days to go. Looks like the December sale may be about right. The bidding is now up to $11,000 ($13,145) with the buyers premium. Also, I just noticed that the bid increment is $1000, $12000 ($14340). Seems like a pretty steep bid increment, to me. Has it always been this way at Heritage? I just looked it up and the bid increment would be $250 on Comiclink and $100 on eBay.
  8. What? Think it's a little on the low side? It the two books were your books, what would you list them at? GPA shows a sale of a 9.4 price variant in 2013 for $15,535. Apparently it has been cracked out as the cert number 0098041001 in new longer in the census. Because this book has been a tough book for a long time, the census overstates the population of high-grade books because of the crack-outs and resubs. GPA shows the most recent sale of a 9.4 price variant in December of 2014 for $13,500. The last three sales of a 9.8 regular issue are $1704, $1575, $1875, and of course the current auction which sits at $1825. If I average the two variant issue sales and add the current market prices for the regular issues, I get $16,500. Seems reasonably fair to me. If I take the high price on the variant, the lot is a bargain, the books look good for the grade. Your mileage may vary. I don't know where the 9.8 regular issues are going to settle, but I don't think that the price variant issues will get any easier. GPA reports 8 sales of graded 9.4s in thirteen years.
  9. He shows a 9.8 reg cover, but not the 9.4. Pictures 1 and 2 are of the 9.8 regular issue. Pictures 3 and 4 are of the 9.4 35 cent price variant issue.
  10. I am not sure that there are any bronze-age super-hero books that are close to the Star Wars 1 35 cent variant in terms of popularity or price. The demand for this book is not slowing down, either i.e. this sale for $13,500.
  11. The prices on many of her books are high, but then she has others that are reasonable if not a bargain. Very strange. How is the grading? I think that FlyingDonut was writing about the variant sales listed in her feedback history. I don't think she has any 35 cent variants still listed on her website. I also don't think it can be said loudly enough. YOU DO NOT WANT TO USE OVERSTREET WHEN PRICING 35 CENT VARIANTS. Here is what he is talking about. If listed today at these prices, these books would be hammered about 1 millisecond after listing. In answer to your question about grading - the books are generally, but not always, nice, typically 9.0 to 9.4 with white pages. She knows what a nice book looks like but is not a sophisticated grader.
  12. Yes, seller's ebay handle. She inherited a bronze age collection from her dad She did her homework (unfortunately she used Overstreet, way too low on 35 cent variant prices and way too high for most Bronze Age books) and started listing around 80 35 centers as BINs on a weekend. A zero feedback seller listing some of the toughest Bronze Age books with no scans, only pictures, Shieldagent and I were scouring the internet to see if the pictures were ripped off. We figured that the pics were legit and along with the usual members of the variant mafia, collectors guild, and hoarders started hammering the books. Two things then happened. The first was that we found our that the account was set up as a new adult item account. You couldn't use a credit card to complete the transaction. You could only use your paypal balance or checking account. It kind of left you having to pick which books you wanted most against your bank balance. The second thing that happened was she figured out that no one was buying her regular books at Overstreet Prices, but the 35 cent variants were going crazy. So she promptly reneged on some of the first lots taken and doubled her prices. The result was that you now had a new ebay seller with very low feedback. I remember one lot in particular where the buyer negged her. It was a listing for Star Wars 1 and 2 35 cent variants in high grade for a few hundred dollars. The buyer was miffed when she did not complete the auction and she relisted and sold each book for much more. The final clincher was that after the initial listing barrage, we found out that she had multiples of some of the books including at least five of Star Wars 1, most of which now reside in 9.2 - 9.6 holders. She sent one of the Star Wars 1 books to CGC to be certified and sold it on ebay. It sold for 10,000 as a BIN in a 9.4 holder. The book was promptly CPR'd and sold shortly thereafter for over $26,000 on Comiclink as a 9.6. I bought several books from her. When I opened the box the smell of cigarette smoke was intense. Uh-oh. Shieldagent and I started calling them the Marlboro Man books. However, when the books were removed from the reeking plastic bags, they were almost without exception, fresh NM- or better white page beauties. It has been a few years now and I am continually surprised that we haven't seen another set like it. She had no.X-Men books and apparently her dad read the Spidey books because they were mid-grade. No westerns, HB, or horror. Only superhero books and multiples of the first editions like Star Wars, Tarzan, and John Carter.
  13. It is difficult to give you average pricing on the Logan's Run books because "average" implies enough price data to come up with an average. "On average" the book comes up for sale once a year. 2007 was an exceptional year; you might have believed that it was an "easy" 35 center, if there were such a thing. Here are the sales that I know of. Seven sales in eight years. January 2007 ebay raw VG? $82.03 October 2007 ebay raw VG $89.88 December 2007 ebay raw VG? $36.66 May 2008 CGC 6.5 $61 January 2010 CGC 9.4 $350 May 2012 ebay raw VG?Logan's Run May 2012 sale $231.38 October 2012 ebay raw G Logan's Run Oct 2012 sale $199.99 My opinion is that in the current market, $200 is the starting price for a complete G to VG copy of the issue. There are only five certified copies. The 9.4 is still the highest graded by three grades and would easily exceed four figures in an auction. Issue 6 is the next to last issue. Issue 7 is the last issue and there are five certified 35 cent variants in the census including two 9.6s which were both "queenangelica" books. There was also a third "queenangelica" book of that issue, but I don't know if it has been certified or not. Unfortunately, I don't think that there was an Issue 6 in the collection. I hope this helps.
  14. I don't know how I missed seeing this one.
  15. Correct. Sold for exactly 20,000 on 8/29/2012.
