Well you can get a blue label and acknowledgement that there's writing on the cover, at least. It'll just be a rather low grade, something like a 7.0 if the book was very high grade beforehand, for example. If you want the high grade as is, you get the green label.

Check out this thread, as a recent customer is going through the same thing.

Thanks for that , much clearer now.

I was trying to figure out if the acual writing on the book would hurt the grade and it appears like it would with the yellow/blue label even if the second sig is witnessed .

Yes, it will harm the book if you're looking for a blue label, as it will be graded as 'Marker on cover'. If you go green label it will be graded as is, but it will have a green label, which honestly, isn't going to be as desirable on the market.

If you want to get a witnessed signature at the upcoming McFarlane signing event as you mention, I'd sadly recomennd getting a new copy, and saving this copy as it is, bagged and boarded. Of course, if it's strictly for your personal collection and never going to be sold, do what you like.

was hoping they would at least write "Jim Starlin "  written in marker on cover and a blue label haha .

    Yeah don't want a green label .

  3. Hi ,

I have a high grade Batman 423 signed by Jim Starlin a newsstand copy . Or at least I was assured it was an authentic signature by the person I puchased

    if from /

I was considering getting Todd Mcfarlane to sign this book in CGC's in house signing ,  but was wondering if having the Starlin Signature on the book already

would cause the grade to go down or somehow make it undesirable since it is not a witnessed signature ?
From my understanding it will be marked with writing on the cover or something of that nature .

Will they acually take away from my grade from having this signature and do you think this hurts the desirability of the book ?

I've never used UPS or FedEx to ship to CGC. I should probably look into it, but I like the convenience of using USPS. The mail gets picked up daily at my work, so I just put my package on the mail cart.

Yes USPS is very easy, especially if you own a scale and use a shipping service online which is even cheaper .

Free Priority Mal boxes , Weigh, Print out a label , drop it off .

I always pay for insurance. I've never needed it. That's a good thing, but it's getting to the point where I tell myself "This is a waste of money." Of course, you know what's going to happen the first time I don't get it.

Also, I've heard (no personal experience) that getting the USPS to cover for lost/stolen collectables is difficult (even though you had insurance).

Also, I'm a little cloudy right now (no coffee yet). I assumed you were talking about getting insurance for when you shipped them *to* CGC.

Yes was talking about insurance from the intitial shipment but have not considered some of the issues other posters have raised .

It's unfortunate that insurance is even needed at all seeing one is paying to have something arrive safely .

Even worse that it is difficult to get reimbursed even with insurance .

Have you ever researched or used UPS or FedEx?

It’s up to you to declare the value when shipping. CGC determines what the book is worth by the value you put on the submission form. I have seen some of my customers put $20 down on a $200 book to save on return shipping.

If the book gets damaged by CGC you would get $20.00. Same is true with Any of the carriers. Personally, I max out the insurance for each tier.

Didnt realize the value you put down was what they insured it for when shipping back to you and that this would cost you more but yes

the drawback is if their is a problem you only get reimbursed for next to nothing .

Does make sense to max out the tier if you want to cover your bases .

I wonder what percentage of packages overall get lost or damaged .

You should insure the books when shipping to CGC.

Via the Declared Value on the CGC submission form, that will be used to calculate shipping from CGC, which you pay for as well. While potentially hard to determine, the Declared Value should be the value of the book *after* grading for maximum protection. So if your raw Modern book is $10, but $200 in a 9.8 (and you believe it's a 9.8), Declare it for $200.

I assume CGC has insurance for when the books are in their possession, but I don't have specifics.

    Ahhhh ok .

I was unclear as to whether the value you declare them for covers you for that value when shiupping them .

  8.                      Hi ,

I shipped my first comics to CGC like 8 month ago and had no problems . Used UPS Priority Mail .

I am going to be submitting a larger, higher value shipment .

Should I insure the books ? Does cgc automatically have a type of insurance that protects them after I have paid for the specific books to be graded  ?

Am I the only one who gets nervous about shipping?

    Thanks

  9. What do you all do if you buy a book from someone say off of ebay and you get a book with Newton rings?
Is this just an accepted part of collecting now or does the seller have an obligation to list even minor defects in the case ?

One of the reasons I want good cases is if I ever sell or trade the books I want to offer a good quality case to the buyer or person I am trading with .

Who is paying shipping to have them sent back and returned?

To Cgc's credit the return process was very easy .

They paid return shipping both ways and it was insured !

I signed for the book so it seemed very safe as well .

I am just wondering if the defect rate is acually this high as this was my first submission and my first subseqent return of books .

  11. So I returned two books one for very excessive Newton rings , and another for extensive scuffing .

Both of these books were like this right after I received them from encapsulation .

I received both books back .
One case looks good except for a small amount of Newton rings on the back

The other  still has extensive Newton rings .

Should I send the books in yet again to get a good case without scuffs or Newton rings ?

How could I get defective cases again after sending in the books to be corrected for this exact problem ?

As I always note, in my experience, when I have returned comic books for mechanical errors they have always been listed as "Scheduled for Grading" but all that has occurred is that they have been placed in a new holder, retaining their grade. Of course, none of the comic books had suffered any damage, including one that initially reached me with a holder whose bottom had been completely shattered and broken off.

Yes makes sense , when you received the book back was the problem fixed ?

Unless something bad happened to your books on the way back, 99.9% chance they will just change the holder.  Also 99.9% chance that there will be something wrong this time, too.  Different day, different problem.

The dashboard shows the best choice of where it is in the process, as they don't have a step called "Getting A New Holder Because We Can't Do It Right The First Time"

OK maybe this is whats going on then , yes it doesnt make sense to regrade them unless the process of removing them and handling them results in

decreased grades a significant amount of time which seems unlikely .

I believe they are regraded to ensure the book wasn’t damaged when it was removed from the case and thus the grade lowering.

I think this is part of the agreement acknowledgement you check before going through with the process.

This is what had me the most frustrated/scared about my mechanical error saga where I had to send the book back 3 times.

Ahhhh ok yes I checked the agreement .

You would think that after cracking so many slabs the acual cracking wouldnt damage many books as the process would be perfected .

But yeah I guess there are lots of places where things can go wrong .

I wonder if I could acually get a higher grade if they are being regraded independently again .
I wonder if the person doing the regrading knows the grade it got before .

  15. Hi,

So I recently submitted my first two books to CGC for grading . I got them both back and one had very severe Newton rings and

the other had a moderate amount of scuffing .

Anyhow they were very helpful in paying for shipping and insurance to send the books back for new cases .

The customer service agent was very friendly and helpful.

So on the books that I sent back they are supposed to get new cases but I see their status is scheduled for grading .

The comics were just graded I was simply getting a non defective case .

Do they regrade every book that simply needs a new case?

Not sure exactly what is happening here .

    Thanks!
