  1. I'm pretty sure the artist is Al Dellinges. I believe he did a lot of Joe Kubert recreations and homages over the years. If you google his name, you'll see several examples in this style along with an "Al" signature that looks similar to the one in the first image.
  2. I fondly recall his work from the first few issues of Nomad in the early 90's. I was really impressed with his art at the time, but unfortunately his output was pretty limited. I've heard that he was slow and couldn't keep up with a monthly comic. I own one page that he penciled from Namor Annual #1 (inked by Brian Garvey).
  3. The published plates I've seen have an art area of around 11 x 17 on slightly larger board (I think around 15 x 20). I don't know if IDW will bother printing the borders as those generally don't have too much of interest on them.
  4. Thanks -- I'm assuming that's probably the case since no one has contacted me about a scan. Also, I'm pretty sure Darabont had scanned most of the plates (and probably gave copies to Berni), so it would be silly to start over now.
  5. Is this the project that Frank Darabont started years ago? I own one of the plates and had a high-res scan made for him back in 2005.
  6. Someone got a good deal on the Cockrum Ms. Marvel cover. Sadly it wasn't me...
  7. The image is pretty nice, even without the stat overlay. I used to own this years ago and regret not holding on to it.
  8. I should have bought that when it was on Mitch's site for $2700. I'm sure it would be easy enough for Robert Dennis or someone else to fix the stats. Also, did anyone else think the Byrne unpublished Iron Fist cover was a bargain? I would have bid if I had been paying attention.
  9. Here's one I was lucky to find back in 1999: http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1450153
  10. Thanks for posting. Any idea what Jim Sherman was asking for those Legion pages? I'm guessing they sold unless his price was very steep.
  11. I bought a few items in the recent Hakes auction and they do this. It was a little annoying as I kept having to wait for the auctions to close. However, no one placed any bids during the extended period, so it didn't really make a difference. I presume you're talking about tonight's Comic Connect auction. Honestly I think some people just check the site late or are looking for last minute deals. I'll sometimes place late bids on items that seem like bargains. I think It would be tough for an auction house to get away with fake bidding at the last minute and extremely risky from a reputation perspective. Maybe I'm naive, but I doubt any of the major players are doing this.
  12. This isn't all that uncommon. Artists often have extra art boards lying around from other projects and will sometimes use the wrong company's boards. It's possible McFarlane didn't have enough Marvel art stock or maybe just picked the wrong one by accident. I'm guessing he had extras from drawing Invasion or maybe from his run on Detective Comics. I believe he used larger sized board for Infinity Inc, so this probably wasn't left over from that comic.
  13. I'd value that Ditko page at around $3500 - $4000. A nicer example (IMHO) just sold for $4500 on Heritage: https://comics.ha.com/itm/original-comic-art/steve-ditko-joe-orlando-and-george-roussos-tales-to-astonish-61-story-page-14-giant-man-and-the-wasp-original-a/a/7177-93525.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515 I really don't understand the prices people pay for Capullo art, but to each his own.
  14. The HP 7740 arrived today and I'm generally happy so far, apart from the massive size/weight. What's nice is that it scans up to 11 3/4" x 17". My old scanner cut off at about 11" x 16 1/4", which was frustrating. I just wish it would have made it all the way to 12" wide (which is the full size of the glass) to accommodate larger '90's DC cover stock. Here's an example that I just scanned in: http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1456197 The HP Scan software works pretty well although it's unclear which Exposure settings to use. I also tried Paint.net and that was also acceptable and a bit faster to scan. I'm too cheap to splurge for Photoshop at the moment. Thanks to delekkerste and everyone else for the feedback.
  15. I ended up ordering it from Staples for $179.99 as they currently have free next day shipping. It should be here tomorrow. Thanks everyone!
  16. Cool thanks! I'll probably go for it. I just hope the shelf where I currently keep the printer can take the weight!
  17. Is everyone still happy with the HP 7740? My old printer just died so this seems like the perfect opportunity. I currently scan using a Mustek A3 1200S, which is okay, but it doesn't fully scan to the edges.
  18. Definitely not the case for me. I actually moved from collecting comics to art around the time CGC was being started -- once condition became paramount and you could no longer touch/read comics without impacting value. I love the fact that I can actually hold a page of original art in my hands without having to worry about that. I do love collecting art to key issue comics when possible though. Most of the major ones are out of my price range, but I did just pickup a page from the first appearance of Mon-El. I also have pages from the first appearances of several minor and mid level Marvel characters.
  19. That's right -- it's 15% if you bid on site or in advance at http://www.weissauctions.com/ with a 2% discount for paying check or cash. It's 20% if using Proxibid or Invaluable, also with a 2% discount for check/cash. You have to pay 8.625% sales tax if shipping to New York or picking up in person unless you have a reseller certificate. I have to admit that I'm a little surprised that people think these prices are out of whack. Nice Kubert art is hard to come by and is rarely cheap. 3K for an Ernie Chan Claw cover might not seem like a bargain, but for a Kubert one that seems pretty reasonable. A few things were higher than expected and a few lower, but I don't think the results are significantly different than what they would have been on Heritage. Just my 2 cents...
  20. Good catch! I think you're right. I guess this wasn't such a good deal after all. Here's a link to the original auction in case anyone else wants to compare: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Art-Star-Trek-Annual-1990-Issue-1-Story-Written-by-George-Takei-w-9-8-CGC-/232647624380?hash=item362ae106bc%3Ag%3AAqUAAOSwFMdab3Kj&nma=true&si=%2BGn6lPvgyhJoz7b%2BMDbR%2Bjvw8Nk%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
  21. That doesn't mean anything. Comiclink has a cover up on their site that I purchased directly from the seller in 2014 and they've ignored multiple mails from me asking them to take it down: http://www.comiclink.com/itemdetail.asp?back=%2Fsection.asp%3Fid%3D1398%26x%3D51%26y%3D4%26pg%3D16&id=876734 I suspect a large percentage of their fixed price items are no longer available.
  22. Lee -- thanks for posting these! They're fun to read -- even if it's almost impossible to accurately predict what's going to happen on Heritage from one week to the next.
  23. I recently picked up this story from Archie's TV Laugh-Out #21 (1973). I couldn't resist Jughead eating a giant burger. Any idea who the artist is? GCD doesn't have this listed. Maybe Bob Bollling?
