I have one book from this pedigree, Fightin’ Air Force 3. I was shown the GIC 75 in 1996 or 97 and it remains one of the best-looking washtone covers I’ve even seen.

    Dan (Ingels Fan),
Did Bruce himself show it to you? If so, and you know--proof positive--that it was a Salida (and not merely an incredibly fresh gorgeous white-paged structurally killer beast imposter that somebody was touting as a Salida) this would be the first time I've spoken with any other person who knows of the existence of a Perty Thirty Salida.

Me either so I think you be confident that they don't exist.

I heard him mention these but no one other than Bruce ever saw them and, like you, I don't think they exist.

Re: "Perty thirty" GICs, Bruce mentioned that those were the only ones he squirreled away. Without saying much more, I think there were MANY MANY reasons why he could not have afforded to squirrel away comics that were/are universally coveted by people with money to throw around. I, too, do NOT think they exist.

  3. The book is a triumph, Chag! Likewise, I'm honored that you said those things about me. I really just think of myself as a fanboy who happens to dig historical texts that provide accurate and respectful representation of people in the way that you did it. The book deserves high accolades and I'm excited to be able to share the copies I purchased with the Title-VII program in SDUSD as well as the military populations that my department works with. I'm also going to make sure that the Instructional Media Center (a "central library" of sorts for SD Unified teachers) gets a copy so that the librarians there can consider it for a wider rollout in middle and high school libraries across the district.

Bummer is that I think school's gonna probably be indefinitely cancelled at least until June, but I'll see if this can take off a bit in the Fall.
Bravo, sir. It's a refreshing update to the brilliant canon of Kanigher, Haney, Heath, Kubert, Maneely, Grandenetti, Glanzman, Drucker, Estrada, Severin, etc. So glad you saw it through!

  4. Speaking of comics writers. . .
Comic-Fest from about 3 weeks ago was a local San Diego show that's a 3-Day affair that is a bit of a throw-back to old-school Comic-Con from the 70s and 80s. A LOT of great panels. (Wish the dealer's room was a bit more robust with old mom & pop dealers, but that's a slow process.)  Anyway, there was a panel about a Native-American war comic book that got my attention. And I walked into the room as it was just starting. . .
. . .and it was our own buddy Chag presenting about his new comic called Soldier's Unknown
It's a staggering work that you ALL should read. It is a respectful and factual treatment of a story that Chag had the wherewithal to tell. It depicts the military service of Indigenous Americans that hasn't seeped into the consciousness of most Americans. . .most people of the world. Speaking for myself, I know little of this topic and now I want to find out more. I want my students to know about it, too. I took a pic of Chag presenting and a snap of the book.
Beautifully written by Chag and illustrated by Rahsan Ekedal.
Bravo, sir. Chag, maybe you can provide a link to where we can get our hands on a copy?

    Navy Action 17 7.5 $125

Another Everett water cover, this one more in his late 50s hyper realistic style.

Interior stories by Colan, Baily (sharp art), and Drucker.  Great issue!

    Tiny corner off back cover.

    Battlefront 26 4.5 $150

Classic cover.  If you don't like this one, you don't like comics.

This was a heartbreaker for me.  I thought it was HG but it has 2 book length creases that don't show well.  Regardless, a 5.0 just got $350 on eBay, so steal this one.

Amazing book.  It's near the transition to super heroes, so it's kinda half Marvel/half Atlas.  The first story is one of Sinnott' best.  It looks like Heath and Severin.  Then you have an incredible Ditko war story.  Then The last story it's drawn by Don Heck, but if I told you it was Alex Toth you wouldn't argue.  All really top notch.

Might be a bit nicer.  Clean white cover.  Heath with maybe a touch of Maneeley in the background.  Interesting book with Jay Scott Pike art inside.  He was usually in the romance books.  Also has a really wonderful Severin story and a nice Tuska 'Rising Sun' splash page.

Was happy to pick up a reader of Dennis Menace #9 from Mr. Rabin. What goodies did forumites pick up? Pics?

That's what my students call me [at least, to my face]! My friends and foes call me "Mick" or some derivation of that.
That Dennis caught my eye before I even noticed that it was my old copy! Glad you scored it!

I remember when I was a young guy.... I'd read the Kubert stories and skip the others.... I always liked them a bit, but went more for the hero and fantasy stuff. I suppose it was Kirby's defection to D.C. that really put the war books on my radar. I can't even remember when I first became aware of the wash tone covers, but I quickly began to prize them..... one of the books that's been in my collection the longest is a wash tone, but not War.... it's a Viking Prince cover on B&B 23. Andy (Thirdgreenham) ran a poll once that ranked all the Wash Tone War books.... GOD BLESS....

That B&B 23 is such a great book. The switch to the large font for "Viking Prince" [and smaller logo for B&B] was WAY overdue. The Kubert art on all the VPs is astounding, but especially on those later issues. If people are war comics fans, then the B&B 1-24 run is a special treat because it featured the art of most of the war comics stable--Heath, Novick, Kubert, A&E--throughout but with adventure stories featuring Robin Hood, Viking Prince, Golden Gladiator, and Silent Knight. The three washtones--18, 22, and 23--are eminently cool and nicely complement the likes of the perty thirty GIC run and the other washtone war books peppered throughout the Big-5 runs.

Sticking to one is so impossible for me that I’ve never even semi-contemplated it, not even for half a second

1000% agree (although there are a few compelling things about GIC that just make it my fav title overall. The washtone perty-thirty are a significant factor for sure).
