  1. Fascinating! How cool to ask an obscure question of somerb7ng created 80 years ago and get this level of detail and knowledge in an answer! i have a question. Was the decision to change Batman’s name to Justicier a last minute thing? If this page was totally redrawn and panels repositioned, and the captions relettred in French.... why is every mention of Justicier a paste up covering what the letterer originally drew? They must have originally had Batman, or was it some other new name for French readers that was later edited to Justicier? And I’m assuming that the word “le” that precedes it and was not edited didn’t need to, caus ethe previous name also needed “The” like “The Batman”
  2. I went to Roters booth once to see a book. Then he brought out the gloves! I wanted to see the book so I put them on. Didn't buy it, and never stepped in his booth ever again. So ridiculous... As for Rogovin, I think he had some health issues that made him take a step back. That and other issues and events pushed him out of the "elite crowd"...
  3. I think that was Metros booth... the Four Color Comics sign is behind a wall of comics. Rob probably came running over from his adjacent booth cause the cameras were rolling. And they were doing a lot of deals together at the time. For a time. Funny to see Steve appear almost taking a back seat to Rob, considering how it all went down down back then. Who was the other guy in the booth? Looks familiar..
  4. Oh and so as not to disrespect the bidders and buyer of the 9.2, I have to add that most of the time I’m too eager to find a reason — ANY reason — to talk me out of a great book I’d like to buy! Especially six figure copies! I’m sure in hand, it’s a spectacular copy! And overall better than the 8.5s and 9.0s and earns its place in the census. I have an 8.5 which used to be tied for best copy, but has long been eclipsed. And betting on GL to make this copy a 200K book just seemed like a hard road. wait, sorry again to the winner. It’s also conceivable it will do so. I’ve passed on too many books for similar reasons that turned out to be great deals.
  5. Agree. I sometimes feel like I was born into the wrong clan, and in the wrong time. I was already well smitten with comics before Marvels came along ( many of the late ten cent Swan covers give me emotional chills of recognition, and my childhood). I never cared for Marvels until Spidey was in the twenties. And even then, preferred the cleaner DC style. but obviously many more collectors game along during the Marvel Age, and are just the opposite. Although DCs are earlier and scarcer, it’s Marvel SA books that are the most sought after. The relative scarcity might have something to do with it, but must be that Marvel took over fan interest by the mid sixties as DC drooped in excitement... and a dominant breed of Marvel fans has ruled the hobby ever since except for those of us old enough to have lived in a world (universe?) ruled by Batman, Superman etc.
  6. I was temped to go after it especially since it sat so cheaply for so long. But like you I looked closely at the scans and was thinking 9.0, or even 8.5 on a bad hair day at CGC. Then I looked at Heritage's other sold 9.0 copies too, and they all had pretty serious corner and spine issues that didn't look at all like the "what the heck is wrong with this sweet book how is this only a 9.2?" Marvels where there is a 9.8, a few 9.6s a dozen 9.4s. Copies where these flaws take them out of the high grade tiers entirely. Maybe there are no more (or very, very few?) HG copies out there and S22 get the benefit of a curve in grading??
  7. man I love this hobby! had to pinch hit for Tim cause he's fast asleep!
  8. Im sensing a drinking game: "Cut bid - will it work? I dont know!"
  9. Danny’s store was like 100 square feet, plus a back room where the magic happened. as for the Bell bags, Rich yours looks like a first printing. I have a bunch of the other version posted. What do I Win? And funny enough, every book I removed from them after decades was still in great shape. Unlike so many other bags through the ages.
  10. heres 2 more issues with the website: I get a warning that the site is using too much energy. must be all those clocks updating second by second. 20 comics per page is 20 clocks. 100 is 5x as many. (wait, let me check my math on that..... yes its correct.) Waste of computer resources... and more serious, if you switch to mobile view on a computer, theres no way to switch back. no toggle in the mobile page build. Quitting the browser doesn't solve it. Have to delete the cookie to start over. You could argue, who could click Mobile on a Desktop machine. but its a trap if you do.
  11. To date there are very few true high grade copies of these earlier and cool issues. And they have sold for high prices given the demand (small but fervent), however as we have seen over and over, once people come on board and the genre becomes “hot”, more copies, and high graded copies start to follow. So the census is far from complete. Of course in the end there will still be a handful of Hg copies compared to mainstream Marvels and DCs of the era. I’m not aware of or remembering any Pedigee sets either, but probably exist, Bethlehem, white mountain, others? High probability that these copies are sitting snug in mylars and not for sale for quite some time. Oh, and they cost two bucks each back in the day.. time travel!
  12. Rawhide kid 22 and 23. 22 is the monster cover. 23 is his full origin. Non keys but scarce and better to own in grade would be rawhide kid under 30, kid colt under 110 and two gun kid under 70. They are scarier than later issues, but nothing special content wise. There’s also the black panther cover in Two gun kid, and an iron man type villain in Id colt. I forget the issue numbers . Oh and kid colt has a Monster cover And a Ghost cover that stand out.
  13. I just want to add that its not because Im zoomed in too much to see the comics... Il already reducing everything. Its on a big iMac, and these pics are with the browser filling 3/4s of the screen (the grey area is the browser). First is my usual setting. then how small everything has to be to see the FIRST COMIC on each page
  14. even Comiclink's update never had any of these issues. Let alone Heritage's... nuff said what I really cant stand thats common to all the revamps of the comics sites we use is that when they are done, and you navigate to a page, you dont see any comics! they are all below the visible screen area! who reads all that boilerplate at the top. or the empty "designed" space with their logos and branding and salesmanship?? Its like a restaurant menu where the top 3/4s of each page is How to use the menu, and logos and nothing useful except to someone who's never sat in a restaurant before. You want to include that stuff? put it a popup! with a big eye-catching burst -- "How to use this site".. or down the side out of the way of your MERCHANDISE! Comiclink auction pages for instance... you have to scroll to see the first comics to see where in the alphabet you are. You should get that info by clicking to the page.
  15. to me its about a sliding scale. Id scrape off any color touch because I dont want a restored book, and agree with the market that unrestored is worth more. There cant and shouldn't be an incentive to "correct" defaults to achieve parity with books that dont need it. (I know the pressing analogy is just hanging there, but thats all baked in at this point.) So IMO color touch has to be identified as such, and severely penalized in value to discourage it. But there comes a point where there is so much to remove that it affects eye appeal. This book with its black cover is borderline..the result is pretty ugly. However, there was a LOT of color touch. Do most of you really prefer a heavily color touched copy? Is it the lower price for one that "looks" the same? You aren't really getting a nicer (unrestored) copy, just the illusion of one. I suppose CGC could grade books with color touch by ignoring it, and assigning the grade it would have gotten with its color breaking creases visible. That would be interesting. But the guesswork entailed probably makes this impossible. And further encourage a lot more places to be colored in cause, maybe CGC font notice or not lower the grade even more. Some
  16. I have problems with the site too. especially the magnifying glass/ Its like if giant-Man's power could only increase his size from 6'0"to 6'1" ! but, while I haven't a clue hoe the display of books is organized as the default when you land on a page -- maybe sorted in favor of similar books in stock? -- but the Sort feature is just to the left of the first book, above FILTER. Title/issue puts them in the expected order. Maybe a user can change viewing faults, but prob not.
  17. ummm, whats he doing with that train! yecch
  18. Oh I forgot to add. I LOVE THIS HOBBY! Lol
  19. Yeah. Nice upgrade from 9.0 or 8.5!
  20. and, checking the CGC analysis site doesn't appear that the 9.4 was an upgrade. There was a only minus 1 on the 8.5s and a new 9.0 since last July. Of course someone could have squeaked an upgrade of the 9.2 to a 9.4 in the SAME month as a NEW 9.2 was slabbed! Its not probable, but not impossible either. : )
  21. the 9.4 was slabbed between Oct and Dec 2019. When it was auctioned it was the highest graded of a very tough book in HG. so the existence of a better copy should affect the resale of the 9.2. However, as we all know, there's more going on out there in the world that can push the price down right now... Census today: 9.4 9.2 four 9.0s four 8.5s (for reference, when I bought my 8.5 it was the highest graded and stayed near the top for a good while.) However, in fairness and to notbe trashing someone's book, I'd love to upgrade with the 9.2. Still sole 2nd best... (assuming its wise to be buying assets that are fading in value.) So Ill prob sit on what I have.
  22. There’s a 9.4 now. Didn’t it sell as the highest graded copy Last time?
