My SDCC Con Report & Art Day

9 posts in this topic

First off, big thanks to Benno Rothschild and Brian Peck for organizing/hosting the CFA-APA and Comicart-L dinners, respectively. The company was great and, as an unexpected bonus, so was the food! Thanks again gentlemen for your efforts.

I’ve read some reports from the con regarding inflated prices, especially Ditko, Kirby and other SA material. Since I don’t really collect that era, I can’t comment. For the stuff I’m into, prices looked about right. Just wished there was more of it! I didn’t see any prime Miller, for example. But I did manage to pick up a big haul this year (for me). It was the first Comic-Con that I’ve done with wheeling/dealing art as a priority and I’m very happy with what I got.

Thanks to Mike Burkey for this Barry Windsor-Smith WEAPON X page:

Even bigger thanks to Buzz for these three prime Jordi Bernet TORPEDO pieces. He knew what a huge fan I was and remembered to get in touch with me when it came time to move them. What started out as a deal for one piece soon became a deal for three:

I am a huge fan of THE GOON. I was able to get a couple of pieces from Eric Powell directly. I only started buying his art last year. His prices were considered high then, are even higher now, and he STILL managed to just about sell out all his art. I guess I’m not the only fan. Here are a couple of ones I’ve had, I’ll post the newest ones later:

One of my all-time favorites is NEXUS. It’s back and it’s just as good as I remembered. Really happy to get this page from the relaunch direct from Steve Rude:

I’m generally not a sketch hound. I got on Simone Bianchi’s list last year as a favor for a friend. Since I’m also a fan of his stuff, I decided to get one for myself and went for the top-of-the-line watercolor option. I was underwhelmed, to say the least. I really felt like he rushed it. I debated whether or not to dump it or take it back to him this year to “fix” it…would I be throwing good money after bad? In the end, I took it back to him. I am very pleased with the “new” piece. Thanks Simone!:

Besides the art, I had a fun time trying to hunt down the freebies. I ended up with the HEROES comic book and the HELLBOY 2 numbered poster (a great piece, btw). I missed out on the WATCHMEN advance. I found that scoring this stuff was almost as fun as the art! Something to remind myself for next year, depending on my art budget.

That’s it for this con, looking forward to ’08!

Felix

Thanks Chris, you didn't do too bad yourself:P

The more I read about the Michael Golden snafu, the more thankful I am that the commissions I've gotten have gone so smoothly. And that Simone Bianchi didn't take it personally when I was unhappy with his previous effort and did his best to make it right. That's how you keep fans.

Felix, great pickups. BWS Weapon X is gorgeous. And the Goon origin page of the Little Unholy Bastards is classic. hm I guess Newsboy Legion was taken so they had to settle. lol

Hope stuff that nice will be out in Chicago! :wishluck:

Thanks all! I really did luck into the BWS page. Mike Burkey was really easy to work with on that deal,

Nice pickups!! Looks like a very successful con!!

And totally unexpected. I had a couple of pieces lined up beforehand, but wasn't expecting the rest. I had done WonderCon and Super-Con earlier this year where I ended up spending almost no money. This time, I found so much I liked that I had to give up several pieces from my collection in trade when I ran out of cash. I know that's a good problem to have.

Good luck to Rhino and everyone else headed to Chicago!
