There's a fascinating article about the Canadian Whites in the current issue of Alter Ego (#71).

Canada, during the war years, temporarily banned American comics from being sold in their country. A handful of Canadian companies like Bell, Anglo-Canadian, Maple Leaf and Superior began publishing books of their own. Besides the Canadian "Wow" Comics #1, which was published in full color, all of the titles had black and white interiors.

Johnny Canuck was similar to America's Doc Strange (from Thrilling Comics) and Superman, and his face was based on the strips artist, Leo Bachle. Nelvana was the daughter of the Northern Lights and is actually based an old Eskimo legend.

Would love to see a nice image of Wow Comics #1, eccomic!
