HUMAN TORCH....Flame On....Or Not?

14 posts in this topic

It is just a rumor about how the on screen Human Torch will be portrayed in the Fox live action movie, but like Iceman in X-men 2 he will only have his hands flamed on 893naughty-thumb.gif. Again the powers that be at the studios are changing a major character original powers..... 893frustrated.gif

Here is the scoop... The Word on Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four!

"... one of the changes being made to one of the Fantastic Four members to keep him more credible as a live-action character. Johnny Storm will only "flame on"... his fingers, actually making the "human torch" description *more* appropriate in a way!"

Translation: Since comic movies are in the tanks, studio budget cuts make a flaming human being via CGI impossible. So in order to bring the movie in at under $5 million, we'll give him a couple of Bics to hold in each hand.

Do they even have a director signed on yet for the FF movie? How in blazes do they intend to bring this to the screen by Xmas 2004? No way. They'ed better not do a rush job on this...otherwise it will look like the first FF movie which Avi Arad has made sure will never see the light of day again.

They don't, and these press blurbs are likely intended to keep Marvel in the spotlight and bring in some new potential licenses. Due to the horrible BO performance of Hulk and LXG (not to mention lacklustre Daredevil), no one's buying right now.

Other than Spider-man and X-Men sequels (and even they're not certain - Brian Singer stated it may be years before X3) don't expect to see another big-budget comic movie for a long, long time. All the upcoming ones have seen their budgets slashed and many could be permanently shelved.

I think the real reason why these Comic characters do not stay true to their original forms in the live action world is "Greed".If a studio lays a $100,000,000 on the table for a production company to make a movie, more then 85% will go to salarys and the rest to post productions.Maybe they will give the Torch a Bic lighter in each hand and have him say "Flame On....duh"... 893frustrated.gif

".....additional changes will be made to the other characters. Mr. Fantastic won't exhibit specific powers, but will instead have an aresenal of rubber bands that he can shoot with deadly accuracy. And since an invisible girl would not make for a good screen presentation, Sue Storm will now be using camouflage shirts and pants to blend into the background, essentially becoming "invisible" to her opponents. And finally, The Thing, played by Michael Clark Duncan, will make his transformation by having 10,000 orange chicklets glued to his body."

Maybe instead of calling them the "FANTASTIC FOUR" movie maybe it should be called......the "MUNDANE FOUR" foreheadslap.gif893whatthe.gif

When I first read the beginning of this thread, I assumed the reason for the dis-carding of the "body-burn" visual was due to worry-warts a la the [!@#%^&^] incidents. You know...those insufficiently_thoughtful_person kids (with exceptional guidance from the 'rents) that want to emulate Johnny through self-inflicting wounds. Or the older generations trying to fly like Supes- or better yet, Peter Freakin' Pan!

Nice to see the decision was based on much higher consideration$.
