I won the lone comic lot at that auction

 

:applause: What books were in that lot and what were the conditions on them?

 

Odd mix. One SA book, an ASM 14 that was a 9.0 or 9.2, I think Foolkiller owns it now. A bunch of nice EC comics, and some early pre-hero GA

the wayback machine has been idle lately so let's take a look back to 1940s-1950s pittsburgh PA.

charles "teenie" harris (1908-1998) was an accomplished african-american photographer born in pittsburgh pennsylvania.

he freelanced in washington dc and chronicled life in black neighborhoods of the city for the pittsburgh courier.

 

this is the pic of a girl reading four color 141 "mickey & the submarine pirates" that many of you have seen that was taken by harris:

1. at a candy store in 1948, how many comics can you identify?

2. at this stand, the life magazine is from 10-27-1941 but the comics are from 1942.

i was able to identify 14 of the comics and partially identify 3 others. can you identify more?

most comic books were aimed to appeal to boys but there was a period from 1949 to early 50s where romance titles had the largest market share of all titles (10-27% market share of all titles according to the gerber photo journal). what comics did girls read in the past? here's some pics of what they were reading. a few of these pics have been shown before. i've only seen only one picture where a girl is reading a romance title.

see if you can identify some of the comics.

Another nice batch. Happy to see the girl reading the Battlefront # 44. I have a copy buried somewhere but not scanned.

 

In that sea / bed of Dell I betcha there are a couple I still need.
