Not to mention Cap was often pictured on the cover of many Timely comics firing machine guns.

And Bucky too - who was supposed to be what, 12? And we wasn't the only one - most of the kid teams of the era were toting machine guns. Nobody seemed too worried about the message that might be sending back then.
