161 posts in this topic

$8.27 a gallon, here in Normandy, France.

The difference with USA, is that we, frenchs, always paid our gas a lot, for years.

It's why we all have tiny cars :insane:

Also, 66% of the price paid is taxes !

$1.55 per litre in Melbourne over the weekend

If there is a positive about rising fuel prices it would be that the technology flowdown in producing high performance, economical engines may happen a little earlier.

I am a big V8 fan but it makes me laugh when a 6 ltr V8 pumps out 300kw but company's like honda can strangle 180kw out of a factory produced 2 ltr engine.

I see that F1 is introducing hybrid technoplogy next year.

All of you who live around the world... How many miles (km) do you tend to drive a year?

Here in the US, I guess it'd be around 15,000 miles on average according to the insurance folks.

The average in the UK is quoted as a little over 12,000. (thumbs u

We also have to pay a 'road tax', which in my case amounts to £180...about $375. :(

We pay $1.20 a litre right now so that's about $4.80 a gallon. I'm fed up with this BS. They post record profits and grind the average person into the ground. If anyone has any interest in fighting back let me know your thoughts on this. It's an email I got. Spread it around....

THIS IS NOT THE 'DON'T BUY' GAS FOR ONE DAY, BUT IT WILL SHOW YOU HOW WE CAN

GET GAS BACK DOWN TO $.90 PER Litre....hopefully

This was sent by a retired Coca Cola executive. It came from one of his

engineer buddies who retired from Halliburton. If you are tired of the gas

prices going up AND they will continue to rise this summer, take time to read

this PLEASE.

Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea.

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy gas on a certain day' campaign

that was going around last April or May!

It's worth your consideration. Join the resistance!!!!

I hear we are going to hit close to $ 2.00 a litre by next summer and it might

go higher!! Want gasoline prices to come down?

We need to take some intelligent, united action. The oil companies just

laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to 'hurt' ourselves by

refusing to buy gas.

It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.

BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can Really

work. Please read on and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.00 is super cheap.

Me too! It is currently $1.17 for regular unleaded in my town.

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think

that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.14, we need to take aggressive

action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace...not sellers.

With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take

action.

The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit

someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that

WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas.

But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a

price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from

the two biggest companies,

ESSO and SHELL.

If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices.

If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.

But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso and Shell

gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out on me at this

point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of

people!!

I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us send it to at least ten

more (30 x 10 = 300) .. and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 =

3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth group of people,

we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers.

If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then

30 million people will have been contacted!

If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION

PEOPLE!!!

Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all!

(If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do

is send this to 10 people.... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a

mathematician. But I am... so trust me on this one.

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more

people within one day of receipt, all in. I suggest that we not buy from Esso

and Shell UNTIL 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the

next 8 days!!!

I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you!

Acting together we can make a difference.

If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. THEY LOWER THEIR

PRICES TO BELOW THE $1.00 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK.

I have to admit that I was part of the problem and not the solution.

Starting in 1999 I got my first new car. I went from a 1988 Lincoln Town car which got about 15mpg and got an Explorer. Followed by another one in 2001, 2003 and an F150 in 2005. When it came time to turn that in, I figured I just couldn't put up with it anymore and the 1-2x per year that I used a truck just wasn't making any sense.

I ended up buying a Ford Focus which certainly lacks a lot of what I had come to love but after a few weeks I really could no longer tell that I was not driving a gas guzzler. However, I do have a HEAP of extra money in my wallet that has me wondering where the heck it came from.

I did some math and I figured that I drove in the 2 years with my truck appx 12000 miles at an average of 10mpg. That is 1200 gallons (at average of $3) or roughly 60 barrels of oil. A grand total for 2 years

$3600 to fuel the truck

If I do the same math to get to the same place with my Focus which gets 25mpg, those 12000 miles over 2 years would run me 480 gallons of gasoline, or 24 barrels of oil. Grand total for 2 year at $3.50 a gallon.

$1680 to fuel the focus.

So over the course of 2 years, I have saved close to $2000, and used 36 less barrels of oil.

In my opinion, the oil prices will never stabilize until people realize that oil has no future and it is running out. We should all be driving cleaner, fuel efficient vehicles. Hybrids aren't the answer because of the battery. Had the SUV boom of the late 90's not happened I think we would be looking at a higher fuel cost, but in my opinion no where near $4 per gallon.

In Belgium it's around 10.000 miles average, I drive less than 5000 miles a year.

Gas prices today are 5.7721 Euro a gallon or a whopping $9.19 :o

Road tax is around $500 a year for an averaged sized car (less than 2000 cc)

Most European cities were designed in the horse & buggy days, when traveling long distances was an impractical endeavor. As such, you have population centers with higher densities than in the U.S., making it far easier to get around via foot or a public transportation system.

On the other hand, the entire U.S. interstate highway system, and the sprawling suburbs that were made possible because of it, was predicated on having unlimited access to cheap hydrocarbons. Oops!!

Everyone should read this Snopes.com entry and my post from last night about the economics of the gasoline market. There are few things in life that get my goat more than all the misinformation and outright lies that are being spread about high oil and gasoline prices.

Here in Montreal we're paying $1.35 for regular and $1.41 for super per litre...$5.33 per gallon.

Making the trip to the U.S. to fill up might start to be worth it again (I'm less than 40 minutes from the border).

Thank God I dont have to drive ^^

If I didn't have four kids and an ex in a different city (and a girfriend in another town) I'd be happy to live in downtown Toronto and use public transit and save loads of cash. I spend about $700 month just on tolls and gas. Never mind inurance, maintenance, wasted time and the stress.

I drive about 35,000 miles (60,000 km a year)
