One of the cool parts of the hobby is taking a risk that like that and having it come through. Although overgrading is rampant on eBay, there are some sellers who go the other way because they don't want to get involved in hairsplitting over grades. Some, of course, aren't familiar with grading jargon and think "Very good" means the same as "really good."

Last book I need to complete my Baker St John romance run. Unless I missed it, I don't think one has been offered for sale publicly in the five years or so I've been paying attention. We've all bartered, sold, and/or traded amongst each other at some time. It's been a long road. Edit: Tony has really been more determined than just collecting for a long time! When he said, "Very Good", he meant it literally, and was not using the nomenclature that we collectors are familiar with. Probably a big part of why the bidding competition was so reluctant on that one.

Edit: Tony has really been more determined than just collecting for a long time! Yeah, I have to admit that before stumbling on this thread I barely knew who Baker was. Obviously, I developed a man crush in a hurry! Although I've been collecting comics since the 1960s, I never knew anyone who collected romance books. They were still being published into the 1970s, but I have no recollection of ever seeing them on the newsstands, although they must have been there. Are there any significant Baker collections not owned by a boardie? A couple of years ago, an infrequent poster mentioned that he owned the Church copies of TAR 2 and TAR 3 that were auctioned on Heritage in 2006. Both were raw and sold for more than $1,000 each. I'm sure I'd have been astounded by those prices if I had noticed them, which I didn't.

I keep my e-mails from eBay to see prices on books that I lose out on (one reason that I bid on a lot of books that I don't expect/intend to win). Baker wasn't even a gleam in your eye, yet, son.
