One of my biggest eBay steals.  The seller called it VG, posted a poor, out of focus digital pic, and I won it in competition for about $92.

One of the cool parts of the hobby is taking a risk that like that and having it come through. Although overgrading is rampant on eBay, there are some sellers who go the other way because they don't want to get involved in hairsplitting over grades.  Some, of course, aren't familiar with grading jargon and think "Very good" means the same as "really good."

Grail alert!! :)

You still need one of these?

Yep.  Last book I need to complete my Baker St John romance run.  Unless I missed it, I don't think one has been offered for sale publicly in the five years or so I've been paying attention.

My head is exploding from all these books!

Mine as well. It’s a combination of inspiration and a feeling of inadequacy.

John, Ron, Tony and I have all been working on our collections for many, many years.  Me, about 15 years, on Bakers.  We've all bartered, sold, and/or traded amongst each other at some time.  It's been a long road.

Edit:  Tony has really been more determined than just collecting for a long time!

That was the case with this seller.  When he said, "Very Good", he meant it literally, and was not using the nomenclature that we collectors are familiar with.  Probably a big part of why the bidding competition was so reluctant on that one.

Yeah, I have to admit that before stumbling on this thread I barely knew who Baker was.  Obviously, I developed a man crush in a hurry!  Although I've been collecting comics since the 1960s, I never knew anyone who collected romance books.  They were still being published into the 1970s, but I have no recollection of ever seeing them on the newsstands, although they must have been there.

Are there any significant Baker collections not owned by a boardie? A couple of years ago, an infrequent poster mentioned that he owned the Church copies of TAR 2 and TAR 3 that were auctioned on Heritage in 2006.  Both were raw and sold for more than $1,000 each.  I'm sure I'd have been astounded by those prices if I had noticed them, which I didn't.

Was this auction in 2014?  I keep my e-mails from eBay to see prices on books that I lose out on (one reason that I bid on a lot of books that I don't expect/intend to win).

No, that goes back to about 2007.  Baker wasn't even a gleam in your eye, yet, son.

can anyone tell me why Cinderella love skipped from issue 15  to 25 ?

I think the title was put on hold for a while after #15.  When #25 was published, it continued the numbering of Romantic Marriage, for some reason.  :screwy:

St John did all kinds of strange stuff.  Presumably trying to save a few bucks on second class mailing deposits or something.
