Manga

25 posts in this topic

My local library has a HUGE selection of manga. (As well as several shelves dedicated to graphic novels AND a shelf stacked with comic books!)

Since I can sample for free, anyone here read manga and have recommendations for titles to look for?

Lone Wolf and Cub. Haven't seen anything better.

+1

If I were drunk I could be prodded into calling it the best comic series of all time in any language.

American comics certainly owe a lot to it (I'm looking at you Frank Miller)

To continue with the heavy hitters theme (this is like offering up Frank Miller, Jack Kirby and Alan Moore as examples of English language comics) I'm also partial to the works of Masamune Shirow

my son is a huge Manga fan and for what he told me "Death note" is (worship)

Death Note is very cool.

For some other series that I'm currently reading and enjoy look to

Cromartie High School (lots of inside manga jokes, so maybe save this one for a little later)

Fullmetal Alchemist

Monster

I haven't read the Mangas, however I freaken loved FMA & Death Note (I do have Death Note #1 for the Manga, came with the DVD I bought of the show, but have not read it yet)

So my votes are Full Metal Alchemist & Death note.

Maybe I should check my library see if they have Manga, that would be awsome.

I watched Death Note on Adult Swim.

It ended a week ago Saturday and they started re-running it.

Episode 1 was last week and 2 is tomorrow night.

I thought it sucked at first but it grew on me...

:insane:

Is the Magna the same story?

As a side note, I'm going to post a this weekend to get to 9000. If I post at my regular (of late) rate it will take another ten years.

You can still see the swear words in quotes. :cloud9:

And I guessed what it was correctly! :acclaim:

I would recommend a number of interesting manga books. Most of the books I enjoy are considered horror:

Hellsing

MPD Psycho

Kurosagi Corpe Delivery Squad

Uzamaki

Gyo

Blood+

I enjoyed Ju-On and The Ring.

There is a new Vampire Hunter D, issue 2 was just solicited

Then there is the great, great Akira, an achievment in comics.

Gunsmith Cats.

I'm on the fence over Parasyte, and I'm dabbling with Drifting Classroom.

Gantz has been eagerly anticipated for a long time, issue 1 just dropped.

I'm a heathen and never got into Path of the Assassin, Samuri Executioner or Lone Wolf and Cub (even 20 years ago when First Comics released them with Miller and Sienkewicz covers). These three are considered the easiest cross-over books for male fans of superhero comics, that's why Dark Horse grabbed them soooo long ago and has hung onto the rights, even with sales not where they probably expect them. By keeping them in print, they give Big 2 fans who want to move beyond capes and tights something to grab at any time.

I've either read the above or seen other media based on them. Good stuff.

MPD Psycho is NOT for the faint of heart.

NOT.

Reading the 12(?) part Death Note manga takes too long. If you have a Chinatown in your area, you can buy the live action dvd of Death Note 1 and 2 for cheap. Yes, it has English sub-titles and a rock soundtrack for episode 1 anyways. For more info, google the director Mr. Shusuke Kaneko. :blahblah:
