i find it hard to believe that no has brought up the fact that magazine grading has just started and there are already grades that high for them. confused-smiley-013.gif imagine how many more are that out there hoarded up in warehouses. gossip.gif

I have no doubt that the overall percentage of magazines in high grade is much, much greater than that for comics. Mature content, mature art, and mature cover prices mean these weren't being bought by elementary/middle school kids, but more than likely high school/college and older who may not necessarily have tried to keep them "pristine", but didn't mark them up, fold them, trash them, or otherwise deface them. Think of the "comic-relative" condition of your magazine subscriptions (Time, Sports Illustrated, P...boy, etc.,.) sitting on your coffee table, in your magazine rack, etc.,.

Its not pointless. You can slab it, hang it, and have a little mallot hanging from a string attached to it with a nice big sign stating "BREAK ONLY IN CASE OF EMERCENCY" smirk.gif

27_laughing.gif Ok! Guess it might keep the 'under-age element' out of the books too!

It's becoming clear to me that the only Bronze Age mags that should be slabbed are HG key issues...

Take a look at these books that just ended:

Doc Savage #1

Kull #1

Unknown Worlds #1

All really nice books but far from a windfall in which to retire to Aruba with...Methinks it is either too early to sell certain mags or that it just isn't worth the investment to get them graded at all... 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Its interesting that only 1 vampi #1 has sold and the condition was low compared to the rest.

If you look at any vampirella mag from the early 80's you should find a 2 page add from warren in which they are selling back-issues from their warehouse. Absent are issues #1 and #3 meaning they were not part of MH2 (I HOPE). Issue 1 is listed at approx $90 in 1981 but it has a sold-out slashed across the thumbnail on the advertisement.

Couple ways to view this...

Vampi #1 is not a warehouse copy and exists in extremely limited numbers in grades higher than 9.0

or

the boys with the HG copies are holding them to see whether or not it is worthwhile to slab them. THat $330 price on the 9.0 tells me that it isnt worth slabbing it yet (if ever) . THat 9.0 wouldve sold for probly $400 if it had been sold unslabbed with a vf/nm.

My creeping suspicion is that the mag slabbing market is going to be characterized by an early spasm of overpriced sales on what amounts to warehouse copies of non-key issues. Boy that seems familiar.

I'm really curious to see how CGC's grading of magazines affects the desirability and demand. I went to many shows in the '90s and the magazine boxes were always under the tables and rarely bagged and boarded (with the exeption of Vampirella). I've always felt magazine comics were the "step-children" simply because they're not normal - they are oversized and just don't fit in my comic bags, boards and boxes.

I love horror comics and I've picked up a few #1 horror magazines here and there - my best find was Shock Illustrated #3 (I'd love to know the history behind my copy and whose hands it went through to find it's way to me).

This is the first time i have found myself disagreeing with banner, but unless the magazine was part of the warren warehouse liquidation they are MUCH harder to find HG than comics. The attrition rate on magazines were much higher because they weren't as valued as comics (They still aren't, its still considered a "side" collectible to comics, which is nuts, but thats another story...) Also, many people didn't have the mag size bags & boards kicking around if they only bought the occasional mag. Even using the analogy of sports illustrated or whatever, when was the last time you went to the average person's house and saw a stack of 9.6 sports illustrateds? They are taken to the bathroom, read in bed, thrown on the floor, etc. Sure some people take care of them, but they are the exception. Ask Doug Sulipa how it is trying to find HG magazines. Skywald horror backs this up, they didn't have huge piles sitting in a warehouse and hence they are VERY tough to find above VF.

The Vampi #1 & 3 were not part of the warehouse liquidation.Try finding a HG Vampi #100 or 112! A good indication of what wasn't found, is as suggested, look in the back of a late issue warren and see what they were out of, or asking a$$-rape prices for (usually means they were almost out, but i don't always trust that). I think those eerie prices are really strong! The #81 i would have expcted to be higher though, that has sold for $40 in good recently, its not a warehouse copy. Frazetta covers are the equivalent to adams. I think the warehouse copies will eventually show little demand except in 9.6+, but watch out for the non warehouse books, since they are the ones people need to fill holes, and they are the ones specs will be snapping up to. My best bets are Creepy#9,10, 22, 29, 32 Eerie #17, 23, 24, 25, Vampirella #1, 3, 100, 103-112 Savage Tales #1, Famous Monsters #1-32, 38, 46, 51
