Need advice on the High Grade X-Men market.

13 posts in this topic

Just won a 9.0 copy of X-Men #12 at below guide and to say the least I was suprised. I know that X-Men copies don't sell for quite the multiples that other books do but I expected some kind of premium. Now that I have a VF/NM copy of 9,11 and 12 I think I will continue to add to my set but what kind of prices should I expect to pay? Is a copy of say X-Men #5 in VF/NM a premium book?. It seem that X-Men #3 is quite common. Things of this nature will help me greatly so please let me know all there is about X-Men high grade silver.

Sorry, can't help you much on hi-grade X-Men, but I recently got the first issue of Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love CGC 9.0 for less then guide which kind of surprised me too. Maybe you need at least a 9.2 now to pay a multiple?

I don't collect X-Men, so I don't follow the market closely. But I think early X-Men books(1-5) do well, just like all other early Marvel Silver. But I think the multiple madness begins at 9.4, since early X-Men books don't seem that scarce.

NO! How much did you pay, if you don't mind my asking? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

No, I don't mind. Got it for about $131.00.

Great price on that #12.

I sold my X-men #14 CGC 8.5 for a lot more than that just a few months ago.

He didn't get a CGC 9.0 X-Men 12 for $131. That's how much ninanina paid for a Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love CGC 9.0. makepoint.gif

$131 for an X-Men 12 9.0 27_laughing.gif I'll buy those all day at twice that ammount. thumbsup2.gif

Eric - This thread is made for me. Although I collect everything, I have been almost exclusively buying high grade X-men, I 'll give you what I paid this year at the end of this post but you may want to check with someone who subscribes to GPA Analysis or try the the free trial offer they are running right now. I think it was sfilosa who does something with GPAnalysis but I am not sure. Bear in mind when I say high grade, I buy 9.4's and above. If you are looking 9.4's, expect about 3 times guide. I routinely pay about 2.0 to 3 times on eBay for issues 10 and above. When it comes to Heritage, I shoot for about 3 times guide. I see no point to go over that because I have never failed to find it in that range. For issues prior to 9 expect 4-5 times guide or more. If you are looking for CGC'd 9.0's, do not expect to get the same deal you got on the issue 12 ( I would be interested in the page quality on that one because it drastically affect price.) X-men 9.0 issues 10 -and above expect to pay about guide , issues prior to that expect to pay 1 to 2 times over 9.4 guide. As the issues get later, of course, the prices in relation to guide or over guide will tail off. For instance, back in Febuary an X-men 6 (9.0) sold for $598 and issue 9 (9.0) sold for $431 on Heritage ( plus their commission.) That falls in line with what I saying. Issues 1 and 2 can really go crazy in 9.0 and above. Nothing is written in stone but you get the idea.

You mention X-men issue 3 is quite common but that is far from the fact. Any of the early Marvels are not common and although the multipliers are not as high as some other marvel titles, it is still there.

Here is a sampling of some of X-men purchases this year that I can remember:

to add to this, and to what tomega said - this is very surprising (and you should be congratulating yourself on this one...)

X-Men 12 - 9.4 has gone for 1700, 2000, 2500 in the past year.

people definitely pay a premium on it - i wish i was the one who bought it! thumbsup2.gif
