A quick way to diagnose this:

1) Go to START then CONTROL PANEL

2) Double Click on SOUNDS abd AUDIO DEVICES

3) At the top of that window are some tabs. Click on AUDIO

You will see something like the pic below. Tell us what it shows for the SOUND PLAYBACK under DEFAULT DEVICE.

Also, click on the little down arrow to the right and tell us what it shows. This is a place to see what sound devices are ojn your system and will allow you to select one as the default, if you have the drivers installed for your sound card.

This will at least verify what your computer thinks is installed.

No device it says

Read the second post in this thread :gossip:

Add Hardware dosen't work for everything :gossip::baiting:

Never had for me anyway when it came to audio.

Best suggestion I have is to download the realtek drives I linked to.

Or find the info for your motherboard. Here is something that can help:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download181.html

Download that. Google your motherboard, see what you can find.

Cant find the hardware to install.

Then looks like you DO need the driver. You can often download them from the SUPPORT/DOWNLOAD section of your manufacturer's web site. They will want the name/model number and you may well find the sound driver there. Do make sure you select the one that matches your Operating SYstem (I assume XP?)

BTW - BlowUp - the ADD HARDWARE will not show anything special if the drivers are already installed but the device was somehow deselected. :gossip:

Umm. Presario. And where is the model number.

I feel like such a dumbazz.

Start here:

http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html

Select the START DETECTION button to let the system automatically detect your system.

You should then be able to, from there, hit the page to download drivers, or select what kind of driver to download.

If autodetect from the web site does not work, then

if it is a desktop check here

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c00004461&product=89327&dest_page=product

If it is a laptop check here

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c00033108&product=212728&dest_page=product#

After you get the model number then enter it here

http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html

and begin seeking the audio drivers.

If it is a chore just shoot me the model number and I can hopefully post a direct link to the audio driver.
