Erik Larsen feels betrayed by Marvel over Obama variant comic!

33 posts in this topic

My point of view is erik larsen is being a D-bag about it. Even if marvel DID blatantly rip the same general story line and the 'idea' of putting a president on the cover, can you REALLY lay claim to an 'idea for a cover'? Does that mean marvel should be taking out arrest warrants on all the people with foil variant comics post silver surfer $50?

C'mon, get over himself already.

Where in that article did Eric state he was putting out an "arrest warrant" or any legal action against Marvel? He also never laid claim to the "idea" of putting a President on the cover.

All he's saying, and it's obviously true, is that Marvel (who previously did NOT support Obama) looked at the press that Savage Dragon and Larsen got for putting Obama on the cover BEFORE he was elected, and essentially copied the entire cover, concept and story when Obama won.

Marvel should just come out as say, "sure, we did it, so what?" and let it die. Trying to worm their way out of an obvious dupe issue like that just makes them look even dumber.

And I don't have to read a press release to see their level of dumb.

My remark about the arrest warrant was you don't see marvel kicking up a huge stink over foil covers when they did it first (iirc- don't quote me on that one).

Larsen didn't lay claim to the idea of putting a pres on the cover, my mistake. He just put obama first. Marvel capitalised on the amount of publicity and banged out a simple president story, hell the replace the president story is as old as time.

I don't get the big deal, after all comic book story lines and characters can be transposed so easily it's not funny, "spiderman is a copy of batman, batman's a copy of blahdeeblah".

i think he should quit whining and get used to the fact that as he is not one of the big two, and obama is not a 'savage dragon fan' it was always going to be way bigger with marvel. I think he's just jealous.

I think Larson is not going to be very happy when I put copies of a comic book that has the REAL 1st appearance of President Obama in it, knocking SD out of the running for 1st Obama appearance, on Ebay this weekend

Were these CGC encased already? If so, what's your secret Steve?

:jokealert:

If he's not on the cover, it won't matter to the specs. And it better not be that Obama-McCain flip-book. doh!

I am really surprised Erik Larsen is ticked off. Fact is that before Amazing Spider-man 583 with the Obama cover, I had never even heard of Savage Dragon. Now I am fully aware of this comic. His comic can only do good by this kind of publicity. Would not be surprised to see the comic double or triple in sales because of this.

Seriously, Erik is pissed that his old book gets more press than his creator owned title. Which IMHO is a Piece! Everyone recognizes Spidey, Savage Dragon is an ? Character! Who other than comic geeks know this character, regardless of the issue number coming out next week. I know my son knows Spidey all the way and that is based on TV, ETC........ Savage Dragon however, is unknown to the average citizen........ Larsen may be a mediocre artist, but his creation is as unknown as catholic porn in a protestant universe, Just MHO!

Marvel (who previously did NOT support Obama)

hm

really? who did they support?

stephen colbert...as they probably should, as a goof. erik larsen's SD is his individual book, so he can do what he wants, but marvel was right not to pick a real candidate. and when it turned out they could sell a few extra books doing a 5 page obama story..so what? why wouldn't they?

true, it seems to be a swipe of a non-obama president story larsen had done. they could have come up with something a little different. lazy i call it.
