Swine Flu and San Diego ??

79 posts in this topic

We were implementing more stringent food safety proceedures at our facility a couple years ago and I told our Production Manger to make a note of how many of our several hundred associates washed their hands before eating our Christmas Buffet....NO ONE did. GOD BLESS...

OMG, now that is disgusting.

It's not just there....next time you go out to eat, check out how many of the other diners go wash their hands before they eat....probably no one...unless you happen to be on hand for a Howard Hughes sighting. Most of the germs that affect us we give to ourselves. GOD BLESS...

...the ratio is probably similar to the amount of men that don't wash their hands after going to the bathroom.

My favorite moment of the swine flu panic occurred this morning on CNN when Dr. Sanje Gupta recommended that for the time being we replace the handshake with an elbow bump.

Our local news station had one of those hand-held thermal imagining detectors that are being used at some airports. They had a bunch of staffers lined up, including one guy wearing an electric blanket. The imager showed how this guy's body appeared dark red in color, compared to the other people in line, and his temperature measured 120 degrees. He told the camera that were they to get this measurement at the airport, they'd consider pulling him out of line...

Sorry, I figured this to be a joke thread and didn't participate. As of yesterday, here's what I know about this "pandemic."

Swine flu is a mutated version of one type of common human flu, avian flu and swine flu. This is why the pharmaceutical companies are having trouble with it, it is three different types of flu combined. Tamiflu has had mixed results, some areas claim great success and some claim no success. There is currently no vaccine available and the flu shots deployed at the beginning of flu season may have some effect but are not shown to prevent the current "swine flu."

Generally, the very young and very old are at risk due to weaker immune systems. With this strain, this is not proving to be the case. It has been shown to be a greater risk to young to middle aged adults who are otherwise healthy. The reason it presents a risk to this group is that it has triggered an over-reaction in the immune system that can cause extreme and severe respiratory complications and even deathif not treated.

The "swine flu" is no more or less communicable than any other common form of flu that we all face every year, at least not yet. There is always the chance that it will continue to mutate and cause further problems, but that is the same risk with every other strain of the flu, and no greater or less of a threat with this strain.

It is believed that we see more cases in Mexico because of the lack of quality healthcare there. Many people will wait until they are very sick before seeking treatment. The high mortality rate is likely an extension of this problem because the disease process has advanced too far to recover from it.

At this point, it is unlikely that the disease will be contained. Closing the borders will do no good for two reasons. We can't control our borders in the first place and the disease is already here, so it would be like closing the barn door after the horses have left.

Keep in mind that until the media picked this up and ran with it, no one cared about the flu at all. Also, prior to the panic, no one tested for this strain of flu regularly, so there could be hundreds or even thousands more cases than reported in the media, but everyone thought it was just the flu and weren't watching for this specific version.

Bottom line: Calm down. If you have a sudden onset of flu-like symptoms, see your doctor and follow their instructions. Do not run to the E.R. everytime you get a sniffle, in addition to clogging up the system, you are increasing your chances of actually catching it by sitting in a room full of people who might have the disease. You do not need to wear a surgical mask unless you are in constant close contact with someone likely to have the flu. You cannot catch the disease by eating pork. As long as it is properly prepared, there is practically no risk of catching any disease by eating pork.

Any questions?

It's a good idea for us to wash our hands BEFORE we use the bathroom also...to avoid gettng any germs on "inspector gadget". GOD BLESS...

This was the analogy that Obama used the other day. Our local radio shock jocks were frustrated that none of the reporters present reminded the president that while some of the horses may have left the barn, there are still millions inside wanting to get out.

We should bow to each other like the Japanese do instead of shaking hands then.

I'm a strong supporter of closing the borders, but in this context it won't do any good.

And we had two lifeflight helicopters carry off three people that will

probably die from a massive car /18wheeler/ roadside tractormower

accident just down the highway from here. So in the bigger context... :whatev:

Huh! The largest confirmed cases are N.Y.C which started out with 25 Students returning from Cancun and is now up to fifty. The next largest State is a Texas with 26 and a border State. The next largest State is California with 14 and also a Border State. They had their first confirmed case in Georgia the other day. A Woman from Kentucky who had been to Cancun and then traveled to Georgia. See a common thread here? You don't think that people from Mexico might be trying to get here for better Health care.? The Government is only checking the Airports etc. It was Janet N. that made the silly statement about doing nothing because it is already here. She also said in the same appearance that the thousands of Teenagers that are out because of closed schools shouldn't be going to the Malls etc and need to stay home. Like that is going to happen. She also said that most Parents would be taking off work to be home with them. Phoenix is the number one Kidnapping City in the U.S.Mexico City is the number one of all Cities and who used to be the Governor of Arizona? If this thing spreads then it will be because there is not even any random Border checks and people are disregarding the fact of Border crossings and Mobility and trips to Mexico. The Govenment knows the most likely crossing points which are based on accessibilty and Travel etc. It was Obama who said " we will not close the Borders becuase the Economy is too fragile".There was no we can't , It was "we wont".

Yes, but in this case there is a 0% chance that that 18wheeler is going to suddenly take off and run over thousands of Americans on highways across our country....

Well they've officially changed the name to some sort of acronym. It seems the name 'swine flu' was causing people to panic.

I prefer 'Bacon Lung'. Catchy, no? :insane:

Now I have a good reason to stay drunk. Depressed immune system = no cytokine storm.

From the examples you cite, nearly every case is from an American. If by closing the borders, you mean trapping American citizens - businessmen, tourists, anyone else - in foreign lands until flu season is over, that would be a nightmare. If that's not the case, then there wouldn't be much benefit from the closure.

Diseases are next to impossible to contain except in the early stages. The practicality of shutting down all travel world-wide over this flu is not practical.

Stop it with the facts. That is just unacceptable in this time of panic.

I wasn't talking about limiting travel. You can monitor the health of people coming and going through the border or through airports. I'm talking about doing a better job of protecting the border against those folks coming in illegally. The guy who's been saving money for months, maybe years to pay off a coyote isn't going to delay his plans because he has a sore throat and a cough.
