Is there a link between Wolverine and Cable?

I was reading Ultimate X-Men a while back and it revealed that Cable (from the future) was actually formerly Wolverine (at least I think it did). If my recollection is correct, is this a reality only in the "Ultimate Marvel Universe," or is there a storyline that reveals this connection in the regular Marvel Universe as well?
