THE MIKE MIGNOLA THREAD

77 posts in this topic

I was surprised at how immensely popular Mignola was at the 2 day Emerald comicon in Seattle, WA April, 2009. His line up was as long or longer than Paul Smith (X-men) and Adam Hughes (cheesecake, DC) :sumo: combined!

Wow...his line was only about 2-4 people deep at the Wondercon at any one time. He left early the third day. Don't know if it was planned or he was just bored.

Just stumbled across this thread, very happy to see it! I really focus on only a handful of artists, and Mignola is way up at the top (Kirby and Dave Stevens are the other two priorities). I got my NM 21 at Mile High a few years ago for $1, and it was in lovely shape. That alone continues to justify Chuck's existance, at least to me!

I have been looking for a truly complete checklist of his work, though I think I've done pretty well on my own over the years. It has been fun to track down all of those covers he did here and there. There's no one else like him right now, and I am SUPER psyched that he's coming to DragonCon this year. D-Con is primarily a sci-fi/horror convention, so the comic guys tend to not have huge, huge lines. Over the years I've been able to chat up and get sketches and sigs from lots of comic folks without any kind of wait at all. I'm sure his "Hellboy" notoriety will lead to him having longer lines than most comic guests, but hopefully this will be a good chance to say hi, get a sig, maybe a sketch or something. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I actually got to meet Dave Stevens at the same show several years ago, there was no one in line whatsoever, so I was able to thank him for all of his great work over the years. Now that he is gone I am particularly glad that I had a chance to say thanks. Never got a chance to meet Kirby, though.

So...yeah...that's depressing, but back to the point: Mignola rules! I am loving the Library Editions from Dark Horse.

Hey! I'll be at DragonCon this year! Alright! (Though it sucks that Gris Grimley canceled! :frustrated: )

The good/sucky (depends on how you look at it) thing about DragonCon is that it's 80-90% anime kids, costumes, and celebrity-seekers. Comics are a low priority around there, which means talking to your favorite artist is no sweat. I was at Eric Powell's table all the time last year and there was hardly ever anybody there in line. I felt bad for Eric, but anytime I wanted to go talk, it was real simple.

Awesome! Yeah, that is precisely why I love going to DragonCon: if you want to chat up the comic guys, there is usually no wait whatsoever, and in the meantime there are plenty of things to watch!

I know exactly what you mean about Eric Powell, he always has a table and I've never had to wait at all to talk to him. Adam Hughes, Jim Steranko, Carmine Infantino, Frank Cho, Art Adams, Evan Dorkin...and on and on and on, I've been able to meet so many of my favorites and actually have time to chat a little bit and thank them for their work, without having to worry about long lines. It's almost embarrassing sometimes because there are legends sitting idle at their tables while various goth/industrial bands and pseudo-pornstars have long lines at their tables.

The only problem with D-Con is that I think it's possibly getting too big. Back when we started going (1997) it was only about 17,000 people or so, mostly in the Convention Center. When it moved into the Hyatt and Marriott the population EXPLODED. We actually didn't go last year because I just felt like I was done with the con. I think there were something like 50,000 people there the last time we went. Back in the day the Adult Swim panel (which was actually just the Space Ghost Coast to Coast panel) was in a single small room. The last year we went they had it in the ballroom and the line was out of the hotel and TWO BLOCKS DOWN THE STREET. That's just too many people in too small a space.

SO I had pretty much sworn it off...I mean, sure, it's fun to go on a drink and drug-fueled 24/7 four day industrial goth wookie vampire klingon geek orgy, but I'm in my 30's now...BUT this year they've got Mike Mignola, Darwyn Cooke, Helen Slater and Michael Biehn, so they have succeeded and dragging me back in.

Sorry for the derail...uh...some of my favorite Mignola covers include (no access to a scanner or my books here at work):

Dracula Frankenstein War (Topps)

Jenny Finn

The Marquis

And of course all of the lovely stuff mentioned above. I actually didn't know about the Alpha Flights, so thanks for the heads up!!!

Yup, that's DragonCon. For better or for worse. lol

And I also remember when it was in just the one hotel (the Hilton, I think?) and it was actually a lot more comics-focused. I started going around '96-'97 myself.

And yeah, it's become a HUGE deal now. HUGE!

I met Mike Mignola back in ' 95 at a show in New York at the Javits center. I walked right up to his table. There was no one there.

Those were the days. :cloud9:

Mignola is my favorite modern creator and it took me over 5 years of searching to find a page of original art from my favorite work of his... The Doc Doom/Doc Strange GN
