what would you do with 40K

If I had a $40,000 windfall, none of it would go towards comics.

That's an amount of money that you could make some choices with, that could make a small but significant difference to most people's lives.

Comics get paid for out of loose change and buying/selling. (thumbs u

But even with a billion dollars, I could run out of money fast and have nothing of value to show for it.

You'd have to take some ludicrous risks and do some colossally stupid things to run through a billion dollars fast. Most people here wouldn't even know how to spend/risk enough to burn through that much money (me, I'd give it the old college try ;) ). You'd have to spend $45,630 per day, every single day, for 60 years just to run through the principal. It would be hard enough for most people to even spend the interest.

With a billion dollars, you'd get sick of comics long before you ran out of cash, no matter how stupidly you spent it.

yeah or I could buy houses and pay debt. there are good and band ways to spend money. My wife has a big family, I could spend a couple hundred mill on a house and take out a quarter at one time. I just think that a lot of people seem to think that a billion means you can spend without thought, and while I would be able to increase my discretionary spending, I wouldn't just throw money around, I would like to think I'd still try to remember the lessons I've learned from my current finacial situation.

Since we are having such fun in Billionaire world, what would you rather do with 40K

1 - 40K comic

2 - 20 K comics

40 - 1K comics

400 - $100 comics

(and we will just pretend shipping does not exist)

Personally - 40 x 1 K comics, oooooo - warm feeling.

For me, it would be 2-20K comics, done deal.

They say if you really hate someone, buy them a boat.

The two best days of your life. 1. The day you get your own boat. 2. The day you get rid of it.

They say BOAT is just an acronym for "Bring Out Another Thousand" in regards to finances. Whatever they say, I'd still like to own one for a summer...

You are quite right, a Billion is a lot. A million seconds is 12 days. A billion seconds is 31 years.

However, I would caution that it is incredibly easy to blow through cash. When you move up into those levels of living you will be suprised at how many people are waiting to meet you and have sparkly things for you to spend your money on. I have looked at a nice jewlery for my wife that I then found out cost 2 million dollars.

A nice ring, 4-5 million (talking A-Rod/Kobe type bling), shares of a private jet, hell your own jet, a few million, fuel and pilots add more. Docking fees for your boat in Monte Carlo, in the order of 20-30K a day. People are there doing it.

You can rent a yacht (the big ones) for a few hundred thousand for 2 weeks. Fly down to the carribean and they meet you there, have your two weeks and fly back. poof.

You start to feel quite rich, suddenly you are in a casino getting fawned over in the high rollers room with some ball players. poof.

There are some nice watches out there that cost the same as a Showcase 4 in 9.6.

Very easy to blow through some cash on nice cars, believe me I know. Did you know you can buy a $350K Porsche Cayanne - slightly modified of course.

All I am saying is that people could blow through that stash quicker than you imagine and there are no shortage of people willing to help you.

Personally I would pick up one of those cool Dinosaurs on Heritage.

Luckily I don't have any CC bills, my kids college fund is already setup, house and car are paid for.....so I would opt for 40 $1k comic books. I would then donate a majority of them to various charities to auction off.

I agree completely. I'm debt free right now, so $40,000 would easily be enough money to allow me to quit my current job and make a serious run at starting my own business. I could purchase some newer computer equipment and design software and also use some of the money to enroll in school and take a few classes to enhance my skills.

In a sense, yes anyone could probably spend any amount of money on something. You could bid to purchase the Yankees for example.

But honestly, a "couple hundred mil" on a single home? Would be difficult I think.

William Randolf Hearst's Mansion @ $165 mil might be the most expensive residential property in the US. I think it would take quite some imagination to build something that would cost 200 or 300 mil. Not impossible but highly unlikely IMO.

A Burger super yacht pictured here @ $20-$100 mil

If you decided you had to have the biggest, best of everything, sure you could blow a billion dollars.

But you could by a 75,000 sq foot home, a 120 foot mega yacht, one of every luxury car out there, the nicest Honus Wagner baseball card, the Mile High Action 1 (if it were for sale), etc, etc.....

and you'd still have hundreds of millions of dollars left.

pay down some of my home equity line of credit. it would just barely dent it and i'm only paying 4%, but it's adjustable, so if we ever get runaway inflation I'd hate to be paying 14% on it.

of course, my wife has CC debt we could pay off, but i just feel like paying off her CC debt would be rewarding her irresponsibility and in 5 or 6 years she'll just rack up another $40K.

maybe pay off the remaining $10K we owe on the car, which isn't at a great interest rate and the other $30K to the HELOC. then again, the car payments are my wife's responsibility and I doubt she'd take the saved money and use it responsibly.

$40K would be nice and all, but it wouldn't do much to change my lifestyle. i have a huge monthly nut due to mortgage and childcare costs.

Ok so I might have gone high on the single house amount, but was just trying to make a point that the money could be spent if you wanted. Just because it's a lot now, doesn't mean it will stay a lot as you spend it.

or, ya know, don't cheat on your wife.

then you don't have to spend that kinda $$ to make up for your own stupidity.

no woman should take the ring, she should organize a press conference, seem all lovie, then slap his face.

When is a jilted woman going to do this???

Should have been Elliot Spitzers wife.

I'm in the same boat Bri. I don't owe a penny and my wife and I both have defined payment pension plans that pay 70% of gross pay when we retire. I would probably give my wife $20,000 and buy 4-5 Marvel SA keys with the rest. I'm afraid I wouldn't donate any of the comics to charity, I'm a comic addict.
