What was the Greatest Single Comic of the Bronze Age?

161 posts in this topic

I don't see how anyone who's read it would call Hulk 181 the "greatest," to be honest.

Perhaps my confusion stems from such an ambiguous adjective. Greatest. What does that mean in this context?

My presumption is that it's the book that has the best single story, art or combination thereof.

It's probably got to be ASM 122, right?

I don't consider it "the greatest" at all. As far as sales go, probably. It's always a hot book. maybe we need to define what "greatest" means in the title of the thread.

GSXM 1.

Gotta be.

Surely the biggest thing to come for the age was the new X-Men

That and 94, was my first thought as well. Without the team and claremont/cockrum/byrne era, I would argue Wolverine would be nowhere near the icon he is today.

As usual, it's all in the operational definition of the word "Greatest". For me, it was Giant Size Man-Thing #1. I doubt no one else would list that but it was my first comic and therefore in my mind the greatest single issue.

Greatest might mean "most important" to some or it might mean "most enjoyable" to others. Hopefully the list will be diverse.

If Wolverine wouldn't have been added to the X-Men roster he probably would've wound up a a character in the league of the Constrictor. Reading Hulk 181, without him getting in a book like X-Men he probably would've wound up another lame character and maybe even an actual villain, or crappy bronze hero like El Águila. X-Men allowed for character development, which would not have occurred had he made sporadic guest appearances in other titles. Before Byrne came onto UXM Cockrum was seriously thinking of removing him from the team all together.

:preach: we all have out favorites.

Define "greatest," then we can get started! (thumbs u

I agree. What do mean by "greatest"? Just the same, I'll second the boardie who claimed it was Green Lantern 76. I just read a 2000 DC reprint. It was so way ahead of its time--especially the storyline.

Okay. I suspected the ambiguity might be a problem but I threw the thread out there in the middle of BBQ yesterday anyway.

I was talking to a friend last week trying to make the argument that Michael Jackson, together with Elvis & the Beatles, were the 3 Greatest Musical Performers since WWII -- that Sinatra, the Stones, & Madonna didn't penetrate into that group of 3. That I might prefer Sinatra over Jackson any day of the week when making a musical selection but that the fact remained he didn't displace Jackson as a Greatest triumvir.

He asked: "What do you mean by Greatest?"

I said: "Take all contributing factors -- record sales, cultural influence, singing/dancing/entertaining talents, on & on, etc etc -- add them up & average them out. That will give you Greatest. Greatest means when all else is said & done, these are the Greatest, the very tippy top absolute pinnacle of the industry."

Does that help? Still vague, impossible to truly quantify, left to a gut feeling decision, but still workable & should help advance the debate.

So, if you've read H181 you might agree that it isn't the best work of art. But, due to its landmark appearance of Wolverine & huge FMV on the back issues market, does it rise to the very top? Is it the BEST? The GREATEST comic book of the BA? I don't think so...

Conan 24 - Solid story, great art, and Red Sonja :cloud9:

GXM#1 - Yes, that book has had a worldwide impact, and it's a truly great book, but it's gotten to the point were rooting for that thing is on par with being a Yankees fan. Go Cubs.

No, rooting for Wolverine alone would be like rooting for the Yankees. That's akin to going to a casino and cheering for the dealer.

:D
