Scanner Recommendation?

19 posts in this topic

Hey gang,

Sorry if there is a thread on this already but I couldn't find one.

As my OA collection is growing, I am discovering that most of it is too large for my little scanner/printer combo to handle. So I am looking for recommendations for a good scanner that is big enough to scan at least 11x17 if not larger. Lemme know! Thanks!

Most 11x17 scanners can run over $1K but there are two lower cost options.

Brother MFC-6490CW $300

Supports 11x17 scanning and printing

and the Mustek A3 11x17 1200 Pro under $200

they also just released a 600 pro version

I have the Mustek 1200 Pro USB and works just great. I have also tested the Brother and its also a good Deal

This is the BEST flatbed scanner ever made:

The Linotype-Hell/Heidelberg Topaz II 12x18 10,800 DPI Flatbed Scanner.

You don't want to know want it cost originally, they're a fraction of that now anyway, but the shipping is the killer. They weigh 330 pounds! I have one sitting in my garage.

Guys I just wanted to let you know that I was able to pick up the Brother 6490 for ~ $216 on Amazon and also got free shipping. Today it is coming up at around $220 but still a great deal.

From what I have researched, a scanner needs a CCD scan element in order to focus on the raised images of a comic inside a slab. The Brother scanner in this thread has that CCD element. The Mustek scanners do not have CCD - they have a CIS element which will not be able to handle slabbed books. However, both should be fine with OA which sits directly on the platen.

Edited to say that it looks like the Brother MFC-6490CW also has CIS.

Scans of the art look great, especially the pencil piece. I use digital photos for my stuff and pencil pieces are a pain.

How's it print? Have you tried printing out a pencil piece on 11X17 2ply paper yet?
