Cash or Credit

my philosophy was never to buy a book for me, that I couldn't pay for now...

recently though, money is "cheap" (as in credit) and prices on some books are even cheaper... so, if you are very confident you can pay the purchase off in a relatively short period of time, it might be worth it to buy now, and use credit if you need too

Excuse me while I publicly let go my frustration...

Today, my Grail was up for auction. It didn't meet reserve and I was the underbidder. I could have pushed it higher, but then I would have had to take on debt. I've never bought a comic that wasn't paid in full when the next credit card statement came.

I have a comic book fund that is separate from all other savings/investments/retirement/emergency accounts. I could have also easily gone there for the funds.

Was it a mistake to let Flash Comics #1 go? Is it common to buy with credit?

How much are we talking about? You said you "could have pushed it" - what was the difference?

Credit works for you. If you put that Flash 1 on a credit card, you could have gotten a free flight somewhere. If you take two months to pay the bill off, you're still ahead of the game. You're NOT going to pile debt up, you're just doing time payments, and getting something for your money.

I absolutely do not understand the "CREDIT IS BAD" screams I hear. I'd much rather pay for something six weeks from now than right now and get something free for it. I haven't paid to fly for pleasure travel in years - Mrs. Donut and I are flying to Paris in February for our anniversary for free on miles, saving roughly $20K on airfare. I've had to let the miles add up, but who cares? I pay for everything on the card, and then pay it off when the bill comes.

I use credit cards to get the points, just pay off the bills each month, I flew to the Chicago Con using points...the question is, how much interest do you have to pay when you pay off a book? Rates now can be very high. I can understand someone using a card if they plan on flipping the books...which is what I thought Gator was suggesting...that's a business decision...but not with a "grail".

Time payments, with someone here, where you are not paying interest is another story. I don't do them, but I take them all the time....to me,that's more of a hobby thing...not something that's going to put someone in credit interest hell over a comic book.

Oh and enjoy Paris:)

Sharon, how could you have missed one of the 500 meth threads?

Whenever possible, I pay with my AMEX for the points. So, if I could have, I would have put a little over 4k on the AMEX and figured out the rest. But of course, this is all history now.

Buying a Grail requires more patience than cash.

Maybe by January the 5.0 restored will come to market and I can pick that up. :wishluck:

The Credit is Bad Statement should speak for itself when you see the state of our Economy, and the position most Americans find themselves in currently.

What you mention Donut, I would agree with. As long as You pay the Balance off monthly and you are getting something for it, like Free Air Miles.

But check please to make sure you are not paying any fees at all to have that card. Check the fine print.

Finally be sure you arent spending what you normally would not, just to add up more miles. Its Human nature to spend more when you are using plastic and not paying immediatly. This isnt my opinion, this has been documented to be true on average.

+1 Your posts are always informative or at least very amusing, and I always hear The Hedgehog's voice when I read them. I don't have a voice for the Meth Collector.

Wow, the people have spoken.

Say goodbye to the meth guy!

Best of luck finding another one, I'll keep watching for you while I'm shopping...that's primarily my hobby anyway...shopping;)

Nobody's going to jump in here and say buying things on credit cards is a good thing, but I have no doubt that a lot of people do it, especially based on the prices that some of these books pull in at auction. Prices don't seem to be getting any softer -- at least not the stuff I'm interested in.
