I've only seen the theatrical, buy just purchased the director's cut on blu-ray.

Definitely a movie that came out too soon. Underrated, particularly if the space squid swap doesn't bother you.

IMO having the threat be of Dr. Manhattan's magnitude rather than a giant squid was an improvement.

I agree. Still not perfect, still with the same long term limitations as the squid, but far more preferable, as the original ending would’ve seemed a bit too 1950s science fiction B-movie and ridiculous to the general public.

Probably my favorite comic book movie, but I vastly prefer the director's cut, as I find the Black Freighter stuff to be really jarring.  Unfortunately, they decided to only rerelease the "Ultimate" in 4k.  Definitely would have picked up a 4k director's, but it seems that it isn't coming.  Maybe some sort of 8k 20th anniversary cut in 2029. :V
