This is a completely different look compared to the Archie's I've seen.

It's a bit hard for me to tell due to the size of the characters, but I think it's by Bob White. Most of the Archie artists from this time period did (or had done) more "realistic" work in the comics as well, so I think they tended to use that type of style a little more when illustrating the "serious" Archie stories. 143ksk
Just arrived! My first Crippen books Sharp! Definitely very nice examples from the collection! Did you upgrade or were you filling in gaps? Both of those are upgrades (the #21 I upgraded from the Diamond Run copy ). I'm not really trying to put together a HG Archie collection, but I do want a few examples of each pedigree...

Thanks! I do like it. It reminds of Elder/Kurtzman story from Goodman Beaver.

Scrooge
Nice. Is that a flying dog drawn by Al Super-Duck Fagaly? Oh and did you see the expression on the movie ticket person. Wow, does she look like the life of the party! Yikes.

Scrooge
What have you got against flying dogs? Nothing, while unrealistic it serves the cover well, giving a spring to the "coming attraction" 's step which makes her even more desireable (to Archie, at least)

143ksk
I think the most interesting thing about it is that it's early enough that they didn't have the confidence to assume everyone knew who Veronica was. Hence the name on her bag...

kidcolt
WOW, very nice story, thanks for sharing it. Side note on the Archie #40. When I was 12 (1985) my Mom took me to a yard sale. They had several hundred Archies from about 1965-1980, and were selling them for .10 a piece. Our family didn't have a lot of money, but my sweet mother bought me FORTY DOLLARS WORTH! To be 12 and have 400 Archies you've never read was like sensory overload. Well, the people at that house brought out a really beat up copy of Archie #40, which I'd never seen anything like at that time. They told us it wasn't for sale! To this day I still have all 400 books and would not sell them - my kids will be reading them someday! Fast forward to 2001-2002. I was collecting Archie #1-100, and had every issue but #40 (on purpose). My mom was dying of cancer, and before she passed I showed her the #40 I had just purchased that completed the #1-100 set, and told her how much she meant to me. To me, there will never be any replacement for Archie Comics and I slipped an Archie #110 (The "Mama's Boy" Cover) in her casket with her. Mom was a Katy Keene fan as a child, and used to get big stacks of them in the 50's for a dime. Archies are the part of me that are pure and perfect, and remind me of much simpler times in my life. I love you all! Shawn
