So what`s the market for Big Little Books?

16 posts in this topic

They are great books and I have seriously considered collecting them. A big part of the charm for me is that I grew up reading them (the Whitman reprints in the '70s purchased at Pic 'N' Save.) Perhaps with them having many fewer readers than comics had a lot to do with the lack of popularity.

Of course, compared to your average books from that time, they are quite valuable. Plus, they look very cool on a shelf.

Anyone know of any with card covers?

1930's is a good decade for pulps. Generally pulps from the 30's see higher than pulps from the 40's, and 40's sell for more than 50's pulps.

I'd say pulps are scarcer in most cases than BLB's. Just MHO.

I was at Heritage last week and they had about five short comic boxes full of them. Looked like they were grouping them up for larger lots, other than selling one at a time. So I would imagine they will be up for sale soon, if your looking to get some. They all seemed in VG/F range. FYI

I have seen the Magic Dragon of OZ sell for a lot. And all of the Shadow pulps do well. Even Tom Swift does pretty well. I would list the first Tracy BLB as a key. I like all of the Green Hornet, Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon BLB. I would take the Mickey Rat BLB and the reprint with the normal Mickey cover. I like ducks and would take them all but you can get the Pirate's Gold story by Barks in one issue at a moderate price. The Macy Mickey book does pretty well in high grade. The giveaways and early books are also keepers. You have to determine which ones you like and save those. I don't think there are any real keys except for the Tracy book (first) and Mickey. And the Shadow has a big following like Timely in comics (well maybe not that bad). I will ask Robie and see what he says. There are a lot of other children's books that do pretty well too.

Just for the record, i have about 800+ BLBs, i find them decent sellers, all i have to do is make three pics, front back and a combo of spine & fropnt cover to show edge wear, and they sell.

7.0 FVF and better holds to Guide, some times higher like the Shadow and Green Hornet ones - a few of the early Mickey Mouse ones like Bat Bandit, Blaggard Castle, the #717 Mickey classic as well as "rat" cover

once you get away from "main" character types, the "action" on them slows down

most Saalfield BLBs are slow - again, the main character ones are popular and sell

best

I see lots of old Big Little Books on Ebay, some much older than comics but only sell for a fraction of the cost compared to comics. Why are Big Little Books not in demand and which are the keys?

My witness is that the market for BLB's is very slow. A few sell ok, but most sell for substantially below guide. I know that just before the Guide started listing them, Geppi was on a buying tear. He must have/had thousands of them, so they aren't scarce.

I visited Geppi's when I was in Baltimore last weekend for the con. I was really impressed with the WALL of Big Little Books. They were stunning. Does anyone know.. was that a complete collection?
