I regret to be the underbidder for that book when it was a 9.0 :tonofbricks:

I didn't go strong on it because the green color was kind of wonky on the book and emailed a few boardies about that issue.

When the census showed a disappearing of a 9.0 and a new 9.2, I had a strong hunch that it was this copy.

Ah - so glad I ask the board these things. I didn't even notice! You're right - what's with those greens?? So you're saying the was a 9.0 that got re-subbed and got a 9.2?

cracked, pressed, and resub are likely here. As far as the green, darker green is the more common of the two but for sure, the lighter green is not "wonky" as I thought back when I first saw this book as a 9.0

Had I did a little more research, I would have bid higher back then. I was just a little hesitant on bidding it up at the time because I wasn't so sure about the shade of green.

This is very interesting - go back 3 pages and take another look at my raw copy, it has the same greens as this 9.2. :o

but who's to say which are the "right" greens? is it the popular conception that your copy (nice btw) and this 9.2's greens are indeed "wonky"?

I've gone back thru this thread and would have to say that the darker green seems to show up more BUT the Pacific Coast 9.6 with W pages is "Wonky Green" as well (pg 37 in this thread)... :acclaim::applause: Thank God...

I do think your copy is a 9.0 also and if you ever want to part with it, send me a PM. I promised I won't flip it on Ebay right away

I'm going to be shopping for a low grade X-Men 1 soon, something in the 3.5 range. Any advice? Any particulars about this particular comic I should know about?

I'd look for one with no chipping or pre-chipping, and nicely centered - may as well get the best 3.5 you can find!

CL auctioned more X-men #1 than just about any other places combined, especially for 8.0 and above, thus the reason why I started this thread 2 years ago to fill in the "gap" that GPA left out.

this new 9.2 copy was the 9.0 that was on Pedigree for $24k last year. I think this copy can go for $48k. You wonder why people pressed?

not that I don't believe you - I do - but just curious how you know it's the same book?

I'm so intrigued by this green thing. Of course we know that all books have subtle variations of color, but is it common for there to be 2 more or less "variants" in shade that are this distinct? Is there any other key book that shows this?

None that I'm aware of.

At first I thought that perhaps the green was more subject to fading from exposure to light or somesuch. But that Pac Coast was probably hand picked and well sheltered the last 50 years.

I'm not really familiar with the printing process so I'll wait to see what else we hear... hm

Colour variations are common on comics. Blues, reds, greens, purples can all vary depending on where in the print run a book is.

Reds and Blues in my experience fade very quickly.

In this case, I'd just say that it's a normal printer variation and not a defect (or a variant).

actually, my initial post asked about a reasonable price for the 9.2 I posted - I'd love to hear the board's thoughts on what that might be - again, I know there would be a wide range, but just looking for what the board thinks is the reasonable range...

I'd say a reasonable price range would be anywhere from about $48K - $55K depending on the eye appeal of the book.

That is a pretty attractive copy you've posted (cover is fairly white, page quality is not too bad and it doesn't have any very distracting defects) and I'd expect it to be somewhere in that range.

Considering the book is pretty nice looking even when sitting in a 9.2 holder, it's possible that the book was under graded as a 9.0

could it be a straight resub? sure. Only the original person that cracked the book know for sure.

If it was me cracking that book out, there is no way in hell I would chance a grade bump without pressing it. Slabbing a $25k isn't cheap so tossing in a few bucks to remove any pressable flaws would be the wise thing to do.

More power to you if you can do this kind of risk taking without pressing.

Wonky Green?

Wow, that's a new one to me.

There are differences in the upper left corner of the books based on where in the print run the book was. If we were chatting about the book I refer to it as the color strike.

Starts out deep rich green and fades along the way.

There are also different variances in color of Silver Surfer #2's that go from very deep rich purple to lighter.

This is not because of being exposed or fading.

The Dark green versions of X-Men #1's are generally more desireable from a eye appeal standpoint.

I've seen colour variations on many books. I've never really considered it a defect.

It probably happens to most books but is more noticeable only when books are held beside each other.
