1st Walking Dead appearance

13 posts in this topic

First full appearance is Walking Dead #1.

After lots of research and discussion on the boards here, it was discovered that Agents #6, Capes #1 both came out on the exact same day as Walking Dead #1. So a tie goes to the full appearance. (thumbs u

No I mean tie goes to the actual book WD #1.

Regardless of their intended day, IMAGE is notorious for being LATE.

So what actually happened was those previews were actually advertising another comic book on the shelf to buy, not a future book coming out.

All 3 books were available for purchase for the first time on Wednesday Oct. 8th 2003.

The dates on the inside covers of the preview books predate WD #1 which was why everyone originally assumed these books came out first. Which they were intended to do. But after looking into it, that wasn't what actually happened.

But they aren't really the 1st appearance, since they didn't come out before WD #1.

They aren't the first appearance because they're previews - not because of the release date.

Ha! That's another point that was debated in the Walking Dead Appreciation thread before the diamond release date was found.

The short answer to whether or not a preview is a first appearance is... it's a matter of opinion. There isn't consistency.

There were examples of CGC labels calling previews 1st appearances and others where it simply stated "______ preview."

Sure ... but in this case, CGC has already spoken - and those books are labelled previews, not 1st appearances.

Please don't misunderstand me, I'm not trying to argue previews are 1st appearances. I'm simply saying that CGC has been inconsistent on this and each of us can make up our own minds as collectors.

This example with WD doesn't prove anything about previews counting as a 1st appearance, because the preview books did NOT come out before WD#1 as shown earlier in this thread.

So of course they aren't the 1st appearance.
