Batman # 1 Blue label 9.0 to be auctioned on ComicLink again.

The reason people are either afraid to pay for restored books or have gotten burned by buying restored books as unrestored is because they did not know how to either detect or understand the restoration done.

So people who don`t like restored books have either been burned or are just ignorant? :screwy:

How about if they just despise restored books? I think collectors are entitled to despise restored books without being called ignorant. Yes, I`ve been burned by undisclosed restored books in the past, but if I`d known they were restored I would never have bought them in the first place, at any price, so it`s not because of being burned that I don`t like them.

May I ask why you despise restored books?

Because there`s nothing special about something that looks nice as a result of artificially being made to look nice. Either love the book in its ragged out condition or just pass on it, don`t twist and warp it to make it something it`s not.

To each his own Tim. I think it is perfectly fair for you to not like restored books, "despise" is a tad strong as it relates to a comic that has done you no wrong, and it is perfectly fine for those of us that buy restored books to be happy with them.

Would I prefer a nice mid grade unrestored Batman 1 over my mid grade slight resto? Sure. Would I prefer paying triple the price for the privilege? Nope.

restored mid grade copies of Batman 1 are not going up in value but rather down. All unrestored copies are going up. I don't think restored copies are a good value for any

early tec, action, superman or batman book.

wow, my experience is just the opposite... restored Bat 1's are up about 20-50% from where they were just a year ago ...we have bought and sold 4 restored copies, all at 20-50% more than our cost, and I have observed at least 3 other similar sales (one was almost double the cost, 100% return/increase)...

and, similarly, early restored Actions are a great investment..I have already been offered as much as 50% more than my cost on them...as long as they are action 1, 7, 10 and 13 (thumbs u

you might be the exception because ebay had a cgc 5.5 ep batman 1 with no trimming or married pages and off white pages sell a few months ago for $9,500. Also there are several batman 1, (5) that are all restored and none selling.

maybe my opinion on early actions is wrong when you consider 1 and 7 and probably tec 27 but as much as I love tec 29, 31 and 35 more than any other books in the world (these 3 books give me goosebumps) restored mid grade are not moving up.

ebay has some "ungraded" copies out there that folks in general, don't put a lot of faith in (and asking prices of 19K and 17500, etc are way high)...but don't just judge batman 1 by ebay (or any book for that matter)...

a cgc 5.5 EP was a $7500 book a year+ ago (and a $5K book 2 years ago)...if it sold for 9500 a few months ago, that is a 20%+ increase?

Jeff (nearmint) sold a 6.0 EP for about a 20%+ profit, very recently, I believe

ciorac just picked up a slight restored 4.5 ish copy, for about 40% more than the trader/seller paid for it...

and just middle last year I believe, ciorac sold a nice 5.0ish mod for a small profit, then the person he sold it to, turned a 35% profit on it, all in the last 6 months

as mentioned, adam and I have moved multiple restored mid gradish copies at very nice prices...

and restored tec 29, 31, 35's are all selling for more today (on the rare occasion they come up for sale) and in demand, than ever before, so I don't get it ...just healthy debate (thumbs u

Gator, as usual when it comes to market trends, is right on the money. I've owned as many batman #1s as just about anybody other than the Fish that I know. I've always found buyers for a copy, even the restored ones, at a profit.

They have gone up fairly consistently over the past decade. They had a stagnant period, as did many restored books in the late 90s, but the trend upward continues for restored copies.

Those are just the publicly supportble facts, not an opinion.

books restored with tear seals, small amount of color touch, reinforced and cleaned are really not restored books. When you add pieces, lighted interior, married pages, replace paper and staples then you have

a restored book.

that is what common sense would dictate... but, unfortunately, to the comic book collecting community (and cgc), even tear seals are considered "restoration"... now, i agree that something like a few dots of color touch or a sealed tear is not "really" restoration compared to adding pieces, etc... but the way we as a hobby define it, it is

Bill, nowhere above do I say that just because I despise restored books, people shouldn`t buy them. It`s just my own personal feeling. While as a philosophical matter I`d prefer that there was no market for restored books so that people would stop restoring them, I know that`s not going to happen.

What I don`t like is someone saying that the only reason I don`t like restored books is because I`m ignorant.

I know where you're coming from, Tim. But I do think that as people become more educated about degrees of resto, we'll see a greater disparity between SP, MP and EP books. That said, I agree with the others that the Denver Bat #1 went for a very fair price.

If you would have read my original post without giving a knee jerk reaction, you would have seen that I was specifically talking about people buying and collecting restored books and the prices that they were willing to pay. I wasn't calling collectors of unrestored books ignorant. I was calling the majority of collectors ignorant when it comes to understanding restoration...and I myself fall into that category to a degree although I have been going out of my way to learn about it in detail over the last couple of years.

Yeah, if I was ever in the market for a nice Bat # 1, that copy would've been at the top of my list. Whether it was a wise investment or not is another matter entirely.

[i wasn't calling collectors of unrestored books ignorant. I was calling the majority of collectors ignorant when it comes to understanding restoration...

Unfortunately in any discussion once the I word is used all rational discourse immediately goes out the window.

Tim was the first to use that word in this thread. Stamped it, called it, no erasies.

Nyah, nyah.

From the standpoint of a collector who doesn't re-sell books, I love the fact that restored books are so heavily discounted. (thumbs u
me too, and I will resell books but I never have a problem passing them on (thumbs u

I would never call you that Tim. Not sure who did. You are clearly a well informed collector and successful business man.

I just need to let you fondle some of my lightly restored gems and see if I can soften your position a little bit
