BIG Bronze Age DC Sale -- CLOSED!!!

202 posts in this topic

Detective Comics #395: Fine-. First Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams collaboration, their first Batman story together, and their first Batman story in this title. And what a story it is!!! Absolutely unforgettable!!!

Given all that, some people say that this is THE first true BA Batman comic book (and/or the first true BA DC comic) -- dark, Gothic, quasi-supernatural, sexy (in its own way for the era)...and just downright weird. I tend to agree. But the fact of the matter is that it remains a very tough book to find in grade, and even mid-grades are often plagued by a popped bottom staple. But not this copy, which is very solid for the assigned grade.

$20

Batman #221: Good. Great cover by Neal Adams, and a completely STRANGE supernatural Batman back-up story by Friedrich, Novick, and Giordano (which I think has been reprinted several times, and for good reason). Trust me...it's weird!!! :insane:

$3

Detective Comics #401: VG/F. The lead Batman story is okay, but the real wild '70s hipster stuff is in the backup story (Robin and Batgirl) by Denny O'Neil and Gil Kane. And you get another cool Neal Adams cover, too!

Detective Comics #415: VG+. Another weird, gruesome Adams cover; a cool lead Batman story written by Robbins (who was one helluva writer, no matter what you might think of his '70s pencils); and several entertaining '50s reprints. You got a lot of mileage out of yer 25-cents back in the day!

Recap of what's left:

Page 1:

Action Comics #486: F/VF $1

Action Comics #487: Fine. 44-page issue with a top-shelf Garcia-Lopez cover! $1

Action Comics #490: Fine+. First 40-cent issue. $1

Action Comics #491: Fine. Hawkman crossover + Brainiac. Cool story, too! $1

Page 2:

DC Special Series #10: VG+. Cool 60-cent "origins" Giant from '78 with interior art by the vastly under-rated Don Newton, and yet another stellar cover by Garcia-Lopez. What a great era!! $3

DC Special Series #11 - Flash Spectacular: VG. Cool '78 "Dollar Comic" with (yep) yet another era-defining cover by Garcia-Lopez. And Gorilla Grodd, too!!!! $3

Mister Miracle #24: VF. Michael Golden (pencils) and Russ Heath (inks!) deliver some of THE best DC artwork of this period in a VERY strong story scripted by well-known oddball Marvelite Steve Gerber. A true winner! $2

Sgt. Rock #302: VG-. First "Sgt. Rock" titled issue (formerly "Our Army at War"), a killer cover by Kubert, plus a lead story by Kanigher-Kubert-Springer. Pretty cool! $2

Showcase #104: F/VF. More cool, offbeat war stories scripted by Kanigher, and another great cover by Joe Kubert. $2

Teen Titans #42: Good. Cover and art by the justifiably legendary Nick Cardy. 'Nuff said!!! $1

Page 4:

Adventure Comics #431: VG-. Very cool (and often very violent by BA standards!) Spectre series by Michael Fleisher and Jim Aparo begins. Classic! $3

Adventure Comics #432: G/VG. More Spectre weirdness! $2

Adventure Comics #433: VG. Aparo! Spectre! And a cool seance cover, too! $2

Adventure Comics #434: VG+. Spectre! Killer cover! $2

Adventure Comics #436: VG. Anti-Nazi story by Fleisher and Aparo, plus another cool Aquaman story by Grell, AND a killer Giant Squid cover, too!!! Great issue! $2

Adventure Comics #437: VG+. Weird!!! $2

Page 5:

Adventure Comics #438: VF+. Angry gorillas!!!! Nice copy! $7

Adventure Comics #439: Fine-. $3

Adventure Comics #440: VG. Last Spectre issue. $2

Batman #238 (DC 100-Page Super Spectacular #8): Classic wraparound all-hero cover by Neal Adams from early 1972! Would be VG+ or so, but the front cover only is separated from the spine 1.5" or so from the bottom lhc up. Still a presentable copy of an always in-demand book!! $12

Batman #256: Good-. The classic Giant Penny story alone is worth the price of admission! $2

Page 7:

Famous First Edition C-30 - Sensation Comics #1 Hardbound w/dustjacket (1974): Not super easy to find in any grade, these hardcover editions of DC's Bronze Age "Famous First Edition" treasuries--sort of like an early attempt at "upscale" "Masterworks"/"Archives" type releases--were co-published by DC Comics and Lyle Stuart (a book publisher in New Jersey), and sold in bookstores (as opposed to newsstands, convenience stores, etc.) back in the mid/late 1970s.

This is an EXACT (oversized) reprint of Sensation Comics #1 (the first full Wonder Woman story after All-Star Comics #8, complete with interior glossy front and back covers and all the original ads).

The dustjacket on this copy has some tape repairs and tears, etc., and there's an original "Waldenbooks" price sticker on the front flap of the DJ, but the interior book, binding, and pages are VF/NM or better. Overall, a VERY nice copy of this hard-to-find BA treasury. $50

Famous First Edition F-6 - Wonder Woman #1 Hardbound w/dustjacket (1975): Same series as the DC/Lyle Stuart Sensation #1 listed above. Not easy to find in ANY grade these days!!!

This is an EXACT (oversized) reprint of Wonder Woman #1: the first full Wonder Woman stories in her own title, complete with all the original ads, but excluding the interior glossy front and back covers which were part of the earlier releases in this series (I guess DC got cheap! Note that the original back cover is printed on the back of the dust jacket.)

The dustjacket on this copy has some general wear and small tears, etc. (but NO tape). There's also an original "Waldenbooks" price sticker on the front flap of the DJ; one interior page is creased; and another is slightly "crinkled" (probably from bad storage). But otherwise the interior book, binding, and pages are VF/NM or better. Overall, a VERY nice copy of this hard-to-find hardbound BA treasury. $40

Page 8:

Superboy #205: VG+. Splash/title page by Neal Adams, superb Mike Grell artwork on the lead Legion story, and cool reprints. What's not to like? $3

Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #231: Good. First issue of this title (numbering continues from Superboy). Fantastic interior artwork by the vastly underrated and largely forgotten James Sherman. $1

Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #233: Fair/Good. Great interiors by Sherman and Nasser (on the backup story). Not sure why this title, from this period, never really caught fire with collectors -- very strong material (art and stories) for the era. FREE w/any Superboy/Legion purchase!

Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #236: Fine+. Levitz and Sherman again -- great again, too. $2

Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #237: Fine. VERY cool interior art in this one by Walt Simonson -- he draws the whole book! $2

Page 9:

The Shadow #5: VG, major overspray in the DC logo. Great series, even post-Kaluta. Frank Robbins haters need not apply! $1

The Shadow #6: VG. Kaluta returns for this issue. Cool Chinatown/Ninja story, too (and yes, I know that Ninjas are Japanese...). $1

Page 10:

The Shadow #11: VG. Two Conde Nast pulp titans--the Shadow and the Avenger!--go toe-to-toe in this one. Uslan and Cruz handle the interiors, and it's great pulp-inspired entertainment for a measly buck! $1

Batman #221: Good. Great cover by Neal Adams, and a completely STRANGE supernatural Batman back-up story by Friedrich, Novick, and Giordano (which I think has been reprinted several times, and for good reason). Trust me...it's weird!!! $3

Batman #224: G/VG. More book-length early '70s grotesque Batman weirdness from O'Neil, Novick, and Giordano. And yet another cool Neal Adams cover, naturally! $3

Superman #423: VF/NM. This is Part 1 of Alan Moore's legendary, elegiac goodbye/tribute to the SA-BA Superman we all knew and loved (before DC turned Supes into...something else). I know that this is technically a "Copper Age" book...but it's a story that no SA-BA fan should miss, so I'm listing it here nevertheless... :shy:
