Hi, let me start by saying that I have been looking at alot of the posts on these message boards for quite awhile now, but have not posted until now. I am glad that everyone thinks that the price I paid for the Witching Hour #3 from strongside on ebay was insane. Last time I checked it was none of your business. I have been collecting for the better part of 30 years and have been building a high grade collection for some time now, and this book is one I have wanted. As you can check, the census shows that there are only 5 9.4's and 3 9.6's. I have dealt with Marty for quite awhile now and I will say that some of his books are some of the nicest in my collection. I asked for supersize scans on all the books I bought from him, and communicated for the entire week about the books. We have spoken on the phone before about certain books. I have no doubt that the book will grade at the least a 9.4 and possibly a 9.6. I realize that the price I paid was high, but when it grades, and it will, it will not look that bad. I have compared some of the books I have bought from Marty with graded books from Jason Ewert's auctions on ebay, and I'm sorry, but my copies are nicer. I have no hesitation in stating that the House of Secrets 106, Phantom Stranger 19, House of Secrets 94, Witching Hour 18 and 19 that I have bought from Marty are 9.6's. The day I choose to have them graded, which might be never, you will see them on the census. Before anyone says to show us the books, let me say that I no longer own a scanner. My other one went on the blink, and have not seen about replacing it. I am not some yahoo, but sometimes you pay more for something of quality. The nm and nm/m books I bought from Marty yesterday were just that, quality.

Welcome to the boards! 893applaud-thumb.gif

I have bought books from Marty in the past which I was very pleased with and can concur that he has some sweet books. Some aren't as sweet as others, but he provides huge scans when they're asked for, and based on the scans he sent me from this round I agree that some of those books were definitely 9.4's and 9.6's! thumbsup2.gif

Well that makes more sense, I was a little confused as to how a book with no description and a 33.3% scan gets that kind of hammer price. I think there is a bit of a double standard, as a lot of collectors moan about the lack of nice raw stuff available and then are 893whatthe.gif when a raw book sells for big dollars. Personally hey man more power to you, buy what you want its your money. Personally I think that raw HG copies can be had far cheaper and that very few books from the late SA and BA are rare, but if you're happy with the book so much the better.

Mr. Wrightson Fan, thanks for writing. Don't let it get to you if you are one of the guys that some here talk about overpaying. All kinds of talk flies around here. Accusations, theories, scammers, shills, bad business deals from certain sellers, overgraders, etc. Believe me, being called an "overpayer" is not so bad considering the alternates (I think Greggy has also been accused of over paying). And as you said, if the raw books you were buying were CGCed, they wouldn't look so high anyway.

So it's nice to have another serious horror fan on board. Please continue to contribute. Sure, we like to see each other's books but if you don't have a scanner, that's no big deal.

What runs are you collecting and what do you think is hardest to find and the most rare in HG? Any speculative bets in this genre for the future?

The two best bidders you want when selling HG BA horror comics, but not when you trying to bid against them. Its been said that comics are only worth what someone is willing to pay and not just what OSPG or GPA indicates. These types of buyers keep the comic market healthy and add excitement to our hobby. Keep it up and will let you guys know when I have some nice raw NM up for sale. thumbsup2.gif893crossfingers-thumb.gif

Wrightson fan--I totally understand your viewpoint. Glad you posted and hope you stay around. I've definitely overpaid for books that I won't get back if I sell anytime soon. (Pacific Coast copies, anyone?)

Ton of Witching hour books on Vault I didn't go for because I have a 9.2...love to upgrade...but lots more I need that I don't have and as a result priortize my purchases--something I've been very bad at doing until a year or so ago...

I'm beginning to wonder if I would be better off with tiny pictures and agitated tones in the description--people love to get abused on eBay it seems.

Thanks everyone for the welcome. I am just like everyone else and don't like to pay more for an item than I have to, but sometimes it happens. redf1shing overtook most of my bids yesterday with some incredibly high ones, but I was not letting the WH#3 go. It was the book I wanted the most out of the auction, hence my high bid. My collecting interests are very eclectic and do not simply run the bronze age horror spectrum. I have some nice high grade pre-code horror that I am fond of. One goal I have is to upgrade my Avenger's run of books from the 130's to the 190's. I plan on keeping the originals of my youth, but I want nicer copies as I read my old ones a thousand times. You could go through my 5000 books and see that I am not a completist by any means. I just collect what "moves me". Here are some recent high grade bronze horror acquisitions for me. Thanks for letting me share.

Thanks for the welcome guys. I guess it took this auction to break the ice for me. Do you guys remember the ebay House of Mystery 221 CGC 9.4 (Wrightson) recently and the DC Special #4 CGC 9.4 that was up a few months ago? Guilty on those too. But, for every book like that there is also a Funky Phantom #3 in CGC 9.4 too. See what I mean? My books are all over the place.

No, I don't collect artwork, but I greatly appreciate it. The only piece of art that I own is an 8 x 10 sketch that Al Williamson did for me back in 1990. It is nice piece showing Flash Gordon jumping off of a cliff to do battle with a gigantic, sword wielding alien. Meanwhile a scantily clad damsel peers around the side of the cliff watching Flash come to her aid. There is also a classic Williamson style spaceship in the background. It was a quick sketch but I am really proud of it, because it was done for me and signed by Al. I had the chance to meet him a few times and he is a great guy.

I have to admit I understand what you mean. I have bought a few nice books from nikkat before, but even the nice ones were overgraded. I have a "NM- 9.2" actual 7.5 that I don't mind getting rid of now. crazy.gif

I've dumped all of my nickkat books. Only a handful of really nice ones graded out actual grade purchased. My worst CGC grade came from a nickkat "NM" that graded 6.5 during my first CGC batch. foreheadslap.gif

Hi. I just received this little three issue series in the mail today. This 3rd issue of Web Of Horror is what Overstreet says is the first published cover by Wrightson, published in 1970. Nice little series that I had never even heard of before seeing this set listed by Calm-mix.
