As the gears of 2006 winds down, I wanted to reflect on what kind of year it has been for me in terms of comic collecting. I'll water it down in succinct bullet points--feel free to comment as well.

[*]This is probably the best year in terms of building my collection...which has also been the most expensive year to date. The tires will be screeching to a halt in 2007 as I recoup from this year's activites. I've said this in past years but it really needs to happen now.

[*]The year of Gold Key. This is the year that I started to collect high grade Gold Key bronze age horror, with titles such as Ripley's Believe it or Not, Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery, and Twilight Zone...this is made possible by the availability of the Random House Archive copies.

[*]The loss of a collector. Guy Lacey is getting out of the high grade bronze age horror market in case someone was living under a rock. It's a double edged sword because although I'm able to fill holes in my collection I am losing a fellow collector that we can share the hobby in which we share interests. I hope Guy may eventually come back, at least in a limited capacity. Good luck, dude.

[*]This is the year I've done some mild experimentation with other genres---I'm aquiring Adams covers in some of the superhero titles and I'm building more war and western books into my collection.

[*]This has been the year of upgrades. As a result, I have over 130 CGC gems that I will be selling through unknown venues. Stay tuned.

Thanks again for everyone who has helped me in my collecting efforts; hope you guys have a great holiday season.

Sterling

Cheers to all of the Horror Boys and Girls...

I hope you'll have a very merry Christmas (or whatever you like to celebrate around this time of the year).

Extra special thanks goes out to Sterling for the Horror Of It All and Greggy for 100 Page assistance (As well as icefires - notible mention).

Keep the blood flowing and keep reaching for the grave. (A little Kasey Kasem humor if you will.)

Oh Sterling... that Monsters on the Prowl #29 was one of three of my 1st comics I ever bought as a kid from 7-11. Nice!

Hey Sterling,

What percentage of all Bronze Marvel horror do you have so far??

Ignoring my raw collection, and looking at posted CGC books in my registry set, 132 / 824 or roughly 16% are Marvel BA horror....which is represenative of the mix during that time (Marvels had many reprint titles that went for around 15 issues on average...DC's title was significantly larger). I probably have somewhere around 900 CGC books...an even smaller minority are superhero (I recently picked up some World's Finest and Adams Superman covers).

As they say in the south, I am in the "short rows" for the Marvel titles...

I need only 3 books to complete my Dead of Night set.

I need only 1 book to complete my Chamber of Darkness set.

I need only 3 books to complete my Chamber of Chills set.

etc.

You finally got around to paying your Pedigree win? (actually I've done that too). My MH trash purchase has shipped. I see you are going to make a report...I'll do the same here....pm me the contact info should I need to return the "gems".

.....b/c I'm going to be done with collecting horror and moving on to other things ...

I know it sounds silly. For me even sad. But I'm preparing for that day.

Reality check: I'm on average 75% complete on all of my bronze age dc horror runs...most of my ba marvel horror runs are within 2 issues on average of being complete. As the hunt increases and the purchases decrease...I will need additional areas where I can focus.

I've thought about pre-code stuff...but until I feel comfortable with FN/VF as the new NM, it probably won't happen. Then again, never say never. The fact that I got sucked into Gold Keys may add a few years to my horror quest, as I've officially added RBION, TZ, and BK to my collecting list.

Now, it may take me another 4 years to get the other 25%, because I'm seemingly the only one collecting this stuff now...and thus no one offering up the goods...I'm already starting to shift more into ba war/western...I am concerned about possible liquidity and/or trades, so I'm also adding keys/superhero books to my collection. Staying with what I like, Adams, Swan, Cardy and Wrightson covers are my mainstay.

In other words, I'm preparing myself mentally that the first mountain will be scaled, and I will need a new challenge. I read and adored war/western books growing up so that's a natural transition for me. Shep's knowledge of the subject doesn't hurt either.

Also, when I'm done with these runs, I suspect I will change from a completionist to a specialist on interested artists.

Just looking at some of the Batman and Detective Comics that are up in the Marketplace right now, and it occurred to me: The whole mystery format carried over quite a bit into at least the Batman books. I'm loving some of these covers, and even though they're Batman, some of them feel like they were ripped from the covers of House of Mystery (Neal Adams art helps quite a bit).

Yep...the horror/supernatural themes carried over into many of DC's superhero lineup...

Have you checked out Superman's venture into Hell with #236? Reminds me of House of Mystery #174...even down to the "Dare You". This issue is currently in ComicLink's current focussed auction.

The Robin dissentegration cover was cool....Any Wrightson or Spook cover is an instant nod to the genre...the Adams Halloween issue...so many...

Several Teen Titans have the theme...

We talked about this same topic eons ago here...but you are spot on.
