Any Experts on Korea and/or Buddhism Out There?

6 posts in this topic

If so, I have a few questions. I've been reading a manhwa that has a few images I find puzzling and was wondering if anyone here who knows about Korean culture could help me out. The narrative is set in rural Korea about 80 to 100 years ago.

What is this structure?

What is the image of in the first panel of the second page? It looks like a light bulb, but I'm missing the context and/or suggestion being made by the image.

What are the monks clanging on?

And lastly, is there any significance to the cloth and the way it is tied around the two women's collars?

Any help would be appreciated.

It's a coming of age story of a young girl. We see her from seven years old on into early adulthood. It uses a great many symbols, but fairly obviously so and seems to reinforce traditional ideas of women and romance. The drawings are lovely. It's worth a read.

There are three volumes. I've read only the first.
