Pre-code database/list?

17 posts in this topic

My scanner is not hooked up or I would scan in the list from the Tales Too Terrible To Tell Terrorology section. If you have access to this series which was printed by New England Comics, it would be most helpful. Indiviual issues are for sale on ebay, or you can buy the entire series direct from New England. Here is a link.

It is an excel spreadsheet broken out into the following fields:

Publisher, Title, Issue #s Began, Ended, Notes

Since it is in excel data sorts can be done on the various columns, so you can arange by Publisher, Title etc.

Pre-code refers to all comics produced prior to the advent of the comics code in Apr/May 1955.

PCH is an acronym for pre-code horror and so refers to comics that are in the horror genre. There is some reasonable debate about what issues to include or exclude. Wrightson Fan's suggestion of the Tales To Terrible to Tell series is the best introduction to pre-code horror, including discussions about whether certain issues should or should not be counted as horror books.

Here is the primary pre-code horror thread. There are lots of pictures and topics and it's a great location to pose further questions.

Pov's xls is focused on horror comics. There are other genres that contain adult-centered themes and images (e.g. Good Girl Art and crime) that were subsequently censored with the advent of the Code. The GA Forum has threads on these as well.

Wow! Thanks guys! You guys rock! BTW, does pre-code comics comprise only of Horror or or there other genres in that set?

I found this board through CGC website. Glad to be here :)

To my mind, pre-code is synonymous with Atom Age: 1947 - early 1955 (just before the Code came into effect). While all Golden age books can be considered "pre-code", I think the term best is applied to the events that led up to the founding of the code: an increase in violence, graphic gore, drugs, torture, sexy women etc etc. The most popular genres of pre-code are horror, sci-fi, crime, romance and adventure. Adventure was usually combined with Good Girl Art in books like Wings, Jumbo, Dagar Desert Hawk, Jungle, Rangers etc.

The superhero genre declined in the late 40's due to the end of World War 2, and there was a noticeable lack of excitement and unity with the then-current superheros having to battle foes other than the Axis powers. DC was the only company to really maintain the superhero genre full force from the Golden Age. Interestingly, their horror output during the Atom Age was extremely small.

More publishers started dropping heros and shifting to more horror and more graphic Good Girl elements, producing either a new batch of titles or adding more horror, gore and Good Girl Art to the other genres. As the Atom Age accelerated, covers and stories became more and more graphic and lurid. During the Goloden Age there were also some similar themes, but the Atom Age took them over the top.

Our friend Dr. Wertham took note, panicked the country with his book Seduction of the Innocent and articles in magazines like Good Housekeeping, Reader's Digest, Scouting Magazine and others about the dangers of comic books. Book banning and burnings began (for real). A Senate Subcommittee hearing on the impact of comic books on juvenile delinquency was convened. The Comics Code came out of that in 1955.

The bulk of the books that brought all this on were the horror/good girl/crime/sci-fi/adventure type books that had increased so much in number and "graphicness". So while all books before 1955 could be considered as not having the code, to my mind the 1947-1955 Atom Age books were the ones really responsible for the code. And pre-code, to me, is best applied to them.

Most welcome. It's always fun to see folks getting involved in pre-code.
