Thought it might be interesting if we ran a thread on unpublished art we own.

That is, artwork scheduled to appear in print (publication) that, for whatever reason, was shelved.

Fell free to post images and associated stories . . .

Well, I think I may have posted it before, so I'll keep it short.

In 1998, Marvel tried to publish the Micronauts again.

#lawyerfail

But they had three whole issues in various states of completion when the plug was pulled. I managed to assemble the art from all three books. You would probably scoff at the price I paid, (and I remain probably the only person in the world who would have paid that price) but it makes me very happy to have them all together.

Cool story (and art), Andrew.

Here's a link to a (circa 1952) unpublished ADVENTURES INTO DARKNESS (ACG) cover by Ken Bald.

Funnily enough, I don't ever recall seeing much in the way of (surviving) published OA from these Horror books (that actually pre-dated EC's entry into the genre) . . .

Keep 'em coming, guys . . .

I still get a kick out of these two unpublished Transformers pieces. First is a splash page featuring Optimus Prime that was supposed to lead off Dreamwave's Transformers #12. Due to Dreamwave's bankruptcy, it was never released.

Next up is the cover artwork for 3H Enterprises' Transformers Wreckers #4. This double page spread was supposed to be split up for two interlocking versions of the comic, but delays and ultimately loss of the Transformers license would result in the comic's cancellation. Some artwork for this comic was produced, and eventually published in the Transformers club magazine, along with the right half of this cover, but the left half remains totally unpublished.

Both pieces were done by Guido Guidi.

Nice pickups there. Guido is definitely quite a prolific artist has done some pretty awesome splashes (unfortunately everything I have is published).

I bought the unpublished cover to ION Limited Series Issue 5 frotm eh artist at Wizard world Toronto Last year.

Goes well with my published cover.

The unpublished cover appeared in Previews but the artist was not happy with how it looks so he redid it.

Cover to unpublished Issue 3 of Empire by Barry Kitson. This was under the Gorilla imprint that went belly up. The cover is shown on back page of #2, but 3 never came out.

Later DC picked up the series and reprinted the two gorilla issues as a #0 before the original 6 issue mini series that followed with all new covers.

I like this topic. I think I've had more in the past, but as I look at my collection it seems I only have one unpublished piece left that was meant for publication. The good news is, it's one of my favorites. There's an overly long diatribe about it in my CAF.

Short answer is... it was meant as Batgirl cover around the time he was doing his Catwoman covers, but was never used!!! which I think is crazy. I love the piece.

Really enjoying viewing all these unpublished (but not unloved) pieces! Here are a few of mine as I really love such pieces -

Aron Wiesenfeld Union #12 Cover -

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=255160&GSub=37938

(This was a fabulous gift from Aron! The Union series was cancelled before this issue/cover was published).

Phil Jimenez Teen Titans Unpublished Cover -

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=4311&GSub=512

(A generous gift from Phil for showing him around Sydney!)

Adam Hughes Team Titans Redwing story unpublished splash page -

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=2875&GSub=303

(I liked this better than the published version).

Mark Schultz Unpublished Rocketeer Pin-Up -

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=2535&GSub=271

(Mark told me back in 1994 that this had been intended for publication as a pin-up in the Rocketeer Adventure Magazine but did not make it in time).

Best,

Royd
