Saturday night was, well, Saturday night.

 

Turnout was excellent, food was edible to decent, bar was well-stocked, company was superb. I'd vowed to drink very little, given how tired I already was and the rigours of the Sunday still to come.

 

That went out of the window by 9.00pm.

 

Huge thanks due here to Brian Ketterer (Foolkiller) who insisted on buying everybody who turned up a drink, even though he couldn't make it over the pond. A giant amongst men, my friend.

Saturday night petered out around midnight on the pavement outside the Fox.

 

Back at the Ibis, the Zumba Zombies were partying in the reception like it was 1999, ignoring the fact that Spain is the next domino to fall into the abyss that is national bankruptcy.

 

Blanking out the singing in the bar, the confetti in the lifts and the screaming senoritas in the corridors, bed never looked so good. My time in its soothing embrace, however, was all too short.

Sunday

 

You'll be stunned to hear that Sunday morning hangovers are not an unusual occurance in chez F_T.

 

However, this wasn't chez F_T. This was a soulless, Zumba-infested, polyester hell-hole with mess room service and 17 smoke alarms per square foot.

 

The F_T room was not a happy place at 6.45am on Sunday morning.

 

Still, the old British stiff upper lip soon took over and we were at the ExCel at 8.30. Coffees were bought, cigarettes were smoked, people whistling and singing were told to off and I spent at least an hour tapping my heels together whilst whispering 'there's no place like home, there's no place like home'.

 

Doors opened, crowds spilled into the hall, and we were off again.

 

Numbers were probably slightly down on the Saturday and we certainly didn't see the mania of Saturday afternoon repeated. Business was solid and steady throughout the day and I at least had time to talk with people whilst the Comicana Girls took care of business.

 

There was a full sporting programme over the weekend, Sunday being especially important, and I had anticipated things would probably slow markedly around early afternoon.

 

It never happened, and we were still doing business up to the 5.00pm close.

 

And then it was pack up and go time. We were forced into having the stock distributed amongst a number of vehicles belonging to friends and colleagues, as the CRV wasn't going to make it back otherwise. The journey was somewhat tortuous at a constant, alert 45mph, but we made it back...and home had never looked so good.

In terms of pricing, slabs were at GPA and raw were all at Overstreet...and they moved without resistance. Obviously bulk purchases were discounted to varying degress, dependent upon what sort of material was being taken. We did quite a brisk business in books for Stan's signature, giving advice to many people on the most appropriate items. I also held an impromptu tutorial on how to crack slabs. I hadn't realised it but when I was releasing the little puppy for a customer, a crowd had gathered as though I was performing some high wire act.

 

To the US dealers who didn't come, you need to next year because there's clearly a huge market here for you. To the UK dealers who didn't bother setting up, you probably missed the biggest payday seen in the UK for 20 years...you dickheads.

Any idea what attendance was for the show?

I notice very little GA sales in your list; is that because there weren't many

GA buyers or is it because your inventory doesn't include much GA?

Was the show mostly about US comics or was there some focus on English

and European comics?
