Experience with storing comics in an air-tight safe?

28 posts in this topic

There was a thread a few days ago dealing with collection insurance that caused me to reconsider how I'm insuring my collection. After some discussion with my insurance carrier, one suggestion that was offered was to drop insurance on some of my more valuable books and instead put the money towards a waterproof, fireproof safe that could house the books.

I currently keep my books in an air-conditioned environment and I'm a little nervous about how stale air might affect the paper quality of the comics over time.

Any advice or input from the boards would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The staples will rust due to the humidity.

That's it? That's all you have? You just haven't been the same since you changed your avatar.

Air tight safes are really only of value if you have a risk of serious flooding. I would argue that if you actually knew there was as risk of flooding, that would not be a good place to store your comics. I prefer a safe that "breathes" to ensure that moisture does not get trapped, regardless of what I'm keeping in it.

No matter how long I've collected or how many precautions I've taken, it still keeps me up at night knowing that comics are decaying paper. As we post, our comics are decaying, turning more and more brittle.

A product called " Eva-dry" absords any moisture in the safe. Keeps collectables and guns from having problems. These are available at most gun stores and stores that sell safes. When the chrystals change pink, you take it and plug it into an outlet for about an hour. It dries out the chrystals and your good for another month. I personally have the E - 333 model.

You feel a deep kinship with them don't you...

My advice is do NOT do this. If you must however, use half of a cassette of 'Art-Sorb.' Contrary to popular belief, it is NOT as expensive as everyone thinks and can be bought for around $70. This will ensure humidity stays at or around an average humidity level of 50%.

Kind Regards,

Yeah, I use the "Remington" branded version. Same product, just different branding. They help, but circulation is still fairly important. Found this out the hard way several years ago. I keep five of these in the safe. A little overkill, but I like the peace of mind and it ensures that there's always a couple of units in the safe while the others are being charged.

I've posted this pic before. I don't keep all my books in the safe, just the most expensive or hard to find.

Are all of those handguns? Are you preparing for the zombie apocalypse or just a home intruder attempting to take your prized bronze bats?

You've got to think of gun collectors just like you do comic collectors - few only have one.
