Some CGC questions.

13 posts in this topic

Hey all, I'm new to the world of CGC and thought this would be a good place to get a better understanding of how this works. Hopefully this is the right forum for this, if not I apologize.

To make sure I understand, if I want to submit a comic for grading, I first have to become a paid member and then also pay for each comic I want graded, correct?

My second question is I plan to go to Wizard World in Philly in June to meet Stan Lee. I just bought the VIP package, actually. I was hoping to have one of my comics signed by him and then graded by CGC at the event as I see this Con is on CGC's calendar. Does anyone know if I need to be a paid member in order to submit a comic at the show? I also understand that a signature has to be witnessed by someone from CGC in order to be authenticated so does anyone know from experience if this is possible at a Con? I would think that having CGC and Stan Lee signing autographs both in the same place at the same time would be a no brainer but I could be wrong.

Thanks guys. I'm a relatively new collector, I've actually been more of an action figure collector over the years but as of late I've gotten into comics instead. And I'm not in this to try to sell stuff, this is just for me. There just hasn't been a whole lot to my liking in figures for quite a while, not to mention the prices just keep getting higher and higher.

I don't believe there's any 'paid member' aspect of it. You just pay for the grading.

If you want to get a CGC Signature Series slab out of your Stan Lee signing, you need to have an authorized CGC sig witness present. I imagine the place will be crawling with them.

Hey Speedy, thanks for the reply. I was actually referring to the information on the Submission page. It says you have two options. Either become a Collector's Society paid member or submit through a dealer.

Here's the info I was talking about. http://www.cgccomics.com/services/how_to_submit.asp

Take care.

Edit: Three options. Submit through Internet Partner.

Welcome to the boards and enjoy the asylum. (thumbs u

I've never had a book witnessed before and hopefully one of our many

members who are more than willing to help a new member to

the boards will send you a PM with the finer details of how you go about

organizing a witness. Good Luck. :wishluck:

That link refers to submitting books to CGC through the mail (eg. when you're sending them books to be graded).

If you're at a show where CGC has a booth, you can submit books to them directly - you don't need to be a member of the Collector's Society, nor do you need to go through a dealer.

Luckily, it's incorrect. I found this in the journal section, it should help you out:

"Since this comes up every so often and CGC intentionally (?) makes things murky (like omitting the 2 check marks on "Direct Submissions" and "10% Discount" when you sign up for a Free membership), here you go.

The basic point is: you do NOT have to sign up for ANYTHING to submit your comics directly to CGC by yourself. AND you still get a 10% discount for free. There is no membership that you have to have to submit books to CGC, none.

You do NOT have to pay a CGC membership fee of $109 or $39 - submitting comics to CGC is free (in this sense).

You do NOT have to sign up for anything at all - you do NOT have to be a member of the chat boards, or the Collectors Society, or any other website.

You do NOT have to submit books through an authorized dealer or your local LCS. Your books go from your hands directly to CGC, no middleman is required.

How to submit your books to CGC for free and also get a 10% discount on services:

1. Click this link: http://www.cgccomics.com/services/how_to_submit.asp Here you will see 3 ways of submitting. You'll want Option # 3.

2. Click on any retailer you want, pick your fave. Since Superworld is local and Ted is cool, we'll use his link.

3. You are sent from CGC's site to here, his website: http://www.superworldcomics.com/ Go to the bottom left and find the CGC "10% off" logo/link. Click on it.

4. You will then be directed back to the Collectors Society page: http://www.cgccomics.com/index_cobrand.asp?GradingCompany=CGC&;;affiliate=SW

That is all Superworld has to do with it. You do NOT send your books to Superworld, you do NOT send them money, you don't do anything at all with Superworld. (This may be the step that confuses people, as it really makes no sense).

5. Read the important instructions at the bottom of the page, and then fill out the forms, print them out, and include them in your package. There is a link on the above page that will help you pack your comics if that's a worry. Then YOU mail your books directly to CGC. No one but YOU, the mailman, and CGC are involved. The only payment made is to CGC for slabbing the books."
