Doug Schmell cashing in his vaulted massive collecion. Poll: Is this the top?

I still don't get the uber-high grade appeal? Or the SA Marvel appeal for that matter. I started collecting the Ditko Spidey's and it's so easy!

But whatever, I'm obviously in the minority, as SA Marvel is king.

I'm not sure what is so hard to get. People love SA marvels so they collect SA marvels. If you have a ton of money to throw at the hobby, you're naturally going to gravitate towards getting the higher graded issues because collecting mid or lower grades would be far too easy.

ASM got me into this hobby. I'm not collecting much right now, but when I do make a purchase it'll probably be an ASM. I love the title. It doesn't matter how common they are or how easy they are to collect, I'm going to dance with the one who brought me. I don't personally have any interest in collecting something just because it's rare.

I'm quoting this so hopefully Firecrotch can see it.

I'll also likely PM it to him, and copypasta text it to him.

I wonder how much skywriting would set me back?

All of us have our own versions of skeletons, varying in different degrees and have done or will do moronic inconsiderate things to get a sale.

Ahem. I have NEVER done NOR WILL I EVER do a moronic inconsiderate thing to get a sale! :sumo::makepoint:

HEAR HERE!

Hey Tom!

This one's decent:

:luhv:

I wish I could bring myself to drop the $20K that it would take to own this.

It will be interesting to see what prices levels are achieved for the non-keys.

As far as I can remember the primary driver behind SA uber high grade non-keys had been Schmell and Brulato competing against each other.

With Schmell out will they see record levels?

Will others see this as an opportunity to buy the high grades they didn't deem obtainable. Will there be some price stability just due to high demand?

I won't be bidding on the non-key books as my SA collection is for reading purposes (mostly mid to low grade). I probably won't bid on the keys either as I would prefer to spend my cash at anywhere approaching those levels on GA.

I just realized this auction happens a week before SDCC. Is it going to suck a ton of money from the dealers at SDCC?

I know that if I bid on anything in this auction, it would mean bringing no money with me to San Diego, but I'm relatively small time.

Will heritage bring any of those books down to San Diego?

The Schmell collection is getting more coverage than the presidential election. It seems like everyday I get another mailing about the auction... HA, Pedigree, GPA, CGC they all are sending announcements. I can't wait for the auction to be over and history.

Have you ever contributed cash to one of the parties? It wouldn't take a lot for them to drown out heritage. :)

I've spent more with Heritage than with the Dems, but I still get more political requests than anything from Heritage. So far on this I've gotten 1 tri-fold flyer. But I've also never bought anything in a signature auction. Just the sunday stuff.

Hate to see the comics themselves, which for a decades long SA Marvel collector like myself are mind-boggling, get lost in the discussions around Doug.

Love having access to all the Heritage scans, which are the best in the business. It's especially appealing to get a look for the first time at Doug's run of JIM, most of which apparently came from a Canadian collection, for which the original owner only collected JIMs.

That is a misinformation regarding the JIMs. Doug Sulipa helped broker that deal between the owner and I believe Metropolis. Doug Sulipa told me the story so it didn't come second hand. The owner bought the books from an OO from the US in the 70s/80s. Sulipa didn't want me to post the OO's name because he is somewhat a founding member of comic fandom.

Thanks for the info, Greg. (thumbs u

Seeing how sweet the JIM run is, it would be nice to know what other Marvel and DC titles were in the collection of that bigwig in early comic fandom. Seems pedigree worthy.

Those Hulk books are incredible, as in appear to have been boarded and mylared right off the press (not pun intended). :cloud9:

I've no doubt that records will be broken in this auction as there's unlikely to ever be a future offering of such caliber for these titles...just wish the Hulk and Spidey runs were still around to appreciate. :(
