Not sure what it is, it's only on the cover wrap and seems to be more pronounced on the inside of the cover. It does not carry over to the pages at all. May be some kind of production defect when they printed the cover, but the stain seems to stay clear from the edges and down the spine on each side. I have no clue what it is or how it got there.

It's a transfer stain, probably not a copy out there without it.

 

What exactly is a transfer stain? Is it considered a defect?

When oils from the printing process transfer from one page to another. Either from the interior, or from another book when stacked.

 

I can't comment on how CGC grades it.
