Original Art by Harvey Ball - The creator of the "Smiley Face"

3 posts in this topic

Hey Guys,

I know that this technically isn't comic art, but I felt that this somehow fits into this thread. I apologize if things like this aren't really permitted here, but here it goes.

To make a long story short - I acquired this piece of art made by Harvey Ball through relations with his family members. It is signed by him.

I know it's nothing special, but maybe it holds some sort of value to someone at the very least for a conversation piece.

Any ideas of what this sort of thing is valued at?

Thanks for any opinions,

Phill

Judging from the variations in the typography, I'd guess that he was creating a typeface, and this was a inked workstudy to see how the letterforms and radius' worked in the whole alphabet. Purely a guess, but that's what it looks like to me.

I teach a college course in typography - this is a very cool piece, thank you for posting.
