Who is the most famous person you've ever sold a comic book to?

123 posts in this topic

Stephen Tyler (Chicago Con 1993 I think)

I remember that very well -I believe they were in town for a concert and came by to promote their Shadowman appearance -- was coming up the escalator when some comotion broke out behind me -- ah heck !! -- Aerosmith was right behind me about 10 feet down the escalator -- i`ve still got a couple posters I got signed that day and some snapshots -- very cool experience --

As the CEO of the show I gave him a tour of the dealer's room after the show closed. Decent guy. I once worked with a cousin of his so we had something to chat about.

Michael Jordan - Back in '94, rep came to our store around 5:00pm, asked if we would open around midnight for Jordan to come look for old Disney comics. We still kind of thought it might be a ruse, until 2 black Mercedes pull to the store. Low and behold, out pops number 23 to look around. He bought about $1500 worth of Disneys.

Cool. Where was this? What shop?

It was a shop called Toontown Comics (no doubt the reason they came to our store) in Long Beach,CA.

When Kurt Busiek was preparing to take on the writing for The Avengers, he picked up a Tales to Astonish 27 from me. He said he was researching the characters and wanted to get a feel of the origins. I thought it was kinda cool that he'd do that by picking up the SA originals rather than just read the Masterworks.

I sold a few books to a Hollywood producer with a few Academy and Emmy awards under his belt. I promised him I wouldn't mention his name though.

You could at least tell us some of the books he bought.

Not a sell, but a phone call.

Couple of years ago my LCS owner got really upset over how Bill Jemas was running Marvel Comics so he sent a certified letter to Bill and Issac Pearlmutter. About a week later Jemas called him and they talked for an hour about comics and how they industry was going. They agreed on nothing and that was that. The next day Issac Pearlmutter called him and with his thick accent asked him all types of questions about the potential for Marvel characters and how the company was percieved by comic shop owners. Much more enjoyable conversation. Fast forward less then a year and Mr. Jemas was shown the door.

Will never forget walking into his shop and having him tell the that story right after it happened.

I have never met any of the Clash but once went back-stage with The Damned and met Dave Vanian and Captain Sensible... or it might have been Rat Scabies... can't recall

Surfer #14 9.8, Avengers #4 9.4 and one other book that escapes me right now.

He's a serious collector with some serious books.

But I'm not saying anything... :shy:

These go back 20+ years:

-.

--Billy Mumy, of Lost in Space fame. He was kind enough to invite me up to his house to meet his wife and show me his Batman collection. I sold him an Adventure 72 in about Fine condition, also at a break even price, but the experience was worth it. Very cool guy with a true love of the hobby.

don't tell harley this..years ago i was told he actually kicked Bill Mumy out of his booth. and i have never heard anything good about Mumy from any dealer...he was quite the pest.

Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath at a small show in the St. Louis area back in the mid-late 90's.

This is by far my favorite post in this thread so far, It was the one with Danzig in it until I came to this one! (worship) What did he pick up if you remember?

I seem to remember it was a couple of inexpensive SA Marvel's.

He used to come by the show once or twice a year and keep a low profile. Nobody really bothered him or hounded him for autographs. Very laid back, didn't say a lot. Seemed like he just enjoyed looking around.

Whenever he came in, the whispering would start though. lol

Geezer was also at Wizard World Chicago in 1998, just another attendee wandering around buying old comic books. Being a HUGE life-long Sabbath fan I couldn't resist asking for a quick photo with him. His wife Gloria was very friendly and cheerfully took the photo.

Awesome picture!

+1

BTW: Toronto collectors might recognize Peter Dixon (Paradise Comics) in the background.

is that a very young Marky Haspel in there also?

sold a serbian simpsons book to matt groening and his son. met them backstage at a kaki king show, and started talking. mentioned i had foreign variants, and they inquired about which issues. got matt's email, sent him pics, and he bought a book from me for an autograph (meant far more than any money, plus the book wasn't worth a whole lot anyway).
