Twilight Zone "The Howling Man"

58 posts in this topic

Love Twilight Zone.

But you want dark and creepy?

Night Gallery

and Tales from the Darkside

I've been meaning to pick up the latter box sets IF they ever go on sale.

That was some seriously creepy stuff a lot like pre-code and post (bronze) horror stuff.

Ben Stiller's Dad (King of Queens Dad) and the Fish guy (abe bagotta?)-- both often seen in comic roles -- will forever give you nightmares.

Night Gallery reminds me of DC Bronze Age horror comics...especially the earlier ones which are more gothic in nature...everyone getting the idea that the shows (and comics) are reflective of one another at the times they are created?

Howling man is a good one for sure

My tops:

It's a Good Life - (Billy Mumy at his child acting finest) My wife still finds this episode too disturbing to watch, my 14 year old loves the jack in the box scene.

To Serve Man - 'nuff said

He's Alive - rare one hour episode featuring a very young Dennis Hopper, chilling, and one of the few hour longs that does not feel dragged out.

Be sure to watch for leftover pieces and footage from "Forbidden Planet" (greatest scifi movie ever?)They appear in at least 3 episodes.

Question: what is the name of the (my favorite) Outer Limits episode where the warrior comes from the distant future and stays with the suburban family?

The Bewitchin Pool was a creepy one. The little kids and aunt T....get goosebumps thinking about that one. The girl who played scout in To Kill a Mockingbird was in it.

It's only creepy now due to rampant pedophilia in our society. It is easily considered one of the worst episodes partially because the horrible voice over work done.

Soldier who was played by Micheal Ansara. Don't mess with the Doctor on Outer Limits trivia. :applause:

I wouldn't think of it, thanks.

One of my all time favorite series though. I don't think there's an episode I don't like in the whole run.

Here's an Outer Limits trivia question for the hard-core fan. No cheating now.

What episode featured an actor named Richard Ney. He was also the star of the investment market update years later that would come on television every day after the Nightly Business Report. It was called " The Ney Report".

The show opened with him getting out of his Roll's Royce and walking into the house. He was a believer in specialist manipulation on the market on a daily basis and offered reports and a newsletter you could purchase.

Quick, and no cheating.

Times Up. Marion Ross was in this episode also. Not one of the most popular episodes, but a really eerie one.

I think the truest pre code vibe is really in "thriller" with Boris karloff. Seriously creepy in many instances, and very crime related in others, but all feel like pre code stories. Check out pigeons form hell, the incredible Dr. Markeson, The purple room, the terror in teakwood and many otners for serious pre code thrills. The box set is available, and while it costs about $70, it is well worth it and covers over 3 thousand minutes of viewing.

My personal favorite is " Pigeons from Hell".

Another series that I can watch over and over. The episode " The Purple Room" starred Richard Anderson. He was at Wizard Chicago two years ago and we had quite the conversation about Thriller, and actor Chuck Connors. He appeared with Connors in a few of the Rifleman episodes and knew him well. He is quite the gentleman and allowed me to take a pic with him and he signed a nice photo for me.

He was literally cracking up when I told him the story of me and my brother's encounter with Chuck Connors at a local comic and card show many years ago.

The Twilight Zone reminds me more of EC comics, especially with the twist endings.

The Outer Limits was more of a horror show wrapped in science fiction. Two other of the very best episodes IMHO were The Architects of Fear (Robert Culp) and The Man Who Was Never Born (Martin Landau).

I was fortunate to work with the son of B. Ritchie Payne, who was Ben Brady's producer's assistant on the show. Here is an unpublished on-set photo of an original Payne family negative of Mr. Payne's son (Michael - my co-worker) with the Megasoid outfit (from the episode The Duplicate Man) when he was 12 years old:

Pigeons from Hell. YES!

*****

The Twilight Zone was truly the best that tv has ever offered.

Except for Star Trek.

The Special One was an episode I liked - kinda the opposite of The Day The Earth Stood still where the alien befriends a family, only this time he was malevolent.

Another farily well-known actor in that episode was MacDonald Carey, who had a very long stint on the soap opera 'Days of Our Lives' before he passed away in 1994.

The sub - plot of the Duplicate Man was classic. The troubled marrige with Harrison James and his wife. At one point in the story you didn't really know if it was the real James or the duplicate. Classic. I had a girl-friend once that looked like a Megazoid. doh!

Again,i must respectfully disagree with some of the comments here.

Twilight zone is in my opinion the very best that television put out in its enfancy, but if one is looking for E.C. type stories,Twilight zone fits the bill only some of the time.

I dont recall any E.C stories that had any sadness, happy endings or funny ones in them.

Whereas Outer limits is the obvious winner here.Every week.

Creepy, gross, scary, mindboggling, awful, direful, disgusting, disturbing, dreadful, eerie, frightening, ghoulish, gruesome, hair-raising, horrible, itching, itchy, macabre, menacing, nightmarish, ominous, shuddersome, sinister, terrifying, threatening, unpleasant, weird

but not one iota of lovey-dovey,goofy or sentimental longing to be found.

Nothin but full-on E.C. comics territory
