Long Beach Comic Con (Nov. 3 & 4, 2012)

That was entertaining. My daughter, Busted Flush and I sat and had dinner outside and wathched the zombies shuffle by; very amusing.

By the way my daughter joined us last year looking for Anime and was pretty much dissapointed. I was surprised by that. She did pick up a cool hat though.

Just picked up a Hulk #1 deslabbed 5.0 ow/w that I should be bringing to the LBCC unless a local buyer makes a commitment tomorrow. Lots more nice books as well including IM 55, TOD 10, Hero for Hire 1, lots of Thanos issues in various titles including Infinity Gauntlet 1-6 all CGC 9.8s, one box of nice trades, and lots more.

See you Saturday or Sunday at booth 114!

Harley used to set up at this show and so did Jamie Graham. Between the two of them they had lots of good GA, SA and BA books. Terry always has a nice selection and he'll be there this year but I live quite a distance so I think I'll pass this year and wait for Yorba Linda and Wonder Con. But to those attendees have fun!

Anyway, too many college and pro games this weekend!

Had a great time at Long Beach. Got to see Joel & Dre!

Thanks Joel for helping me out and keeping my SDCC Adventure Time figures in good shape.

Dre, thanks for bringing my Uncanny Avengers sketch variant to the show!

Grabbed me some comics and got them signed by Neil Adams, Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti, Steve Niles & Len Wein.

Also got my Bravest Warriors (LBCC variant) signed and sketched by the cover artist (John Ho) & had my Supurbia (LBCC variant for ongoing series) signed and sketched by the artist Russell Dauterman. Russell was really cool and great to chat with.

I was busy today helping out CGC. Some fun books got done and there's a decent amount of sketch covers ill need to pick up tomorrow. Haven't had much time to shop yet but yes, there appears to be less Silver and Golden Age books than previous years.

Didn't know where to put my review and sketches so I'll just post it here.

I decided to go there early to take advantage of the early entry for advanced tickets. I was #6 from the front of the line. As soon as I got in, BAM! Aspen and IDW booth up in my face! Aspen booth was happenin all night with Steigerwald showing off his progress sketches on them rare and expensive Lady Mechanika blanks (limited 200 printed for $100 a pop!). IDW had the usual setup but I don't think any of their artists showed up. I'm sure I wasn't the only one wanting Kevin Eastman there today.

The bad thing about getting there early is you'll notice how late some of the artists are. But earlier, a lot of artists were super late. Whilce Portacio didn't show up until around 2pm only to be told that he's not doing any sketches this whole weekend at all.

Last year they had a wrestling ring in the back end of the hall. This year they had roller derby. Caught some of the action and the crowd was digging it. The usual LCS were there, but I wasn't really impressed with some of the non-comic exhibitors. The Lego Station was pretty cool. But overall it took me less than 3 hours to check out every booth and go every aisle. I spent the rest of the day walking around Artists Alley. Finally grabbed CGC at 630 to do my pickups. Mixed reaction from those I talked to. Some said it was more crowded last year, some said it's smaller. Some said having the show AFTER Halloween affected the turn out, others said it was the Zombie Walk that made last year's show big. Personally I think this show is the 3rd biggest show in SoCal, following SDCC and Wondercon.

Got to see Dre (guess he's feeling better now), DWC, Bree & Anthony from CGC, and spent almost half the day with J Mac in the Mercenary booth. And now for the sketches:

Got these two for co-workers who didn't make it to the show. Hyper sketch by anime show favorite Bordin Marsinkul:

Greg Land 9.8 SS of Powerless. Surprised at the grade considering I got this at a dollar bin at Wondercon:

Stuart Sayger. Whatever stories you guys have heard about how this guy does sketches are true. Let's just say that he decided to keep this sketch and told me he'll sub it to CGC himself:

Lastly, here's Whilce Portacio's Non Human #1 Blank Variant. First sold at NYCC, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned anything about this blank considering how much space it offers. Limited to only 300 prints, I got 2 at NYCC, got another 8 today.

I agree the convention didn't seen as busy as last year. Missing a few big names like David Finch, Darwyn Cooke,.Bob Layton, etc. that were there last year along with the Zombie Walk event too.

Getting the tickets and line movement was fast though.

First of all thanks to The Oakman and mysterio. With a collection like what they have and get a thumbs up  is quite an approval.

Don't get me wrong guys. Sayger is amazing! I got to chat with him before, during and after my sketch and he's one of those guys that you know is on a different level, and I'm not just talking about his sketching style and skills.

BEFORE. Surprised that he's even in the show. Last minute addition. Caught him while he was setting up. He remembered me from the CGC op and the countless emails I've exchanged and harassed him with. I got on his list and even bumped me on top. We had all these characters in mind to go with my theme but decided in the Joker with a cleaver. Before I left I told him to try to keep the back clean. He laughed and said NOPE!

DURING. I went back to his booth while he was "destroying" the JLA#1 SDCC Blank Variant I gave him, and I meant that it's the nicest way! We had this convo about his particular style and confirmed that there's no way he will and can keep a blank clean. You pay for his best, and his best is what he'll give, and it comes with being messy. I showed him the Non Human blank I just purchased and asked for his opinion about it. He studied the blank and to my surprised he gave it a smell. He said something about the glue used for the blank. Shrugs.

AFTER. I think Sayger was more excited to show me his sketch than me asking for it. Agreed on a front sketch but he went on ahead and did the back as well  He said a couple of buyers already offered him as much as $300 for my sketch. He pointed out that theres a smudge on one of the interior page. He then circled the smudge, drew an arrow to it and wrote SMUDGE and signed it. Its a love/hate thing between him and CGC. He said its unfortunate that I'm only at the show for a day coz there's more he wanted to do with it. An LBCC staff was walking by and he asked if there's a scanner in the building. Nope. He then told Anthony, CGC witness, if he can sub the sketch tomorrow or at a later show. Agreed. Sayger then told me to take a pic of the sketch coz it'll be better the next time I see it. He told me to take this pic, he said it will be our binding contract:

0370AB97-36BD-446A-B0E8-A20A58F080DF-16173-00000685A5DE3C27.jpg

So it's Sunday night and LBCC should be well on the books, and I don't even know if Sayger submitted the sketch or will wait for a later show. Dunno if he changed anything on the sketch yet or if he found the nearest kinko's to scan the sketch. Anyway there's my Sayger story which is prolly the highlight of the show. Maybe I'll share my Benitez and Steigerwald story later on
